FX Upfront News: Archer Renewed and More

After announcing the renewal of critically adored Justified earlier today, FX has also given the green light to a third season of Archer. The animated comedy will actually have a 16 episode third season, with three episodes airing with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia in September and the rest airing in its usual January time period. There’s no word on how this will affect The League, though. Both Archer and Justified have raised their ratings this season and continue to generate serious buzz with each passing week.

It’s not just our pals at ISIS that are making news today at FX’s upfronts. Here are a few news items coming out today, all through tweets by TV Line’s Matt Mitovich:

  • Firefighting drama Rescue Me may have wrapped production long ago, but the seven season old show will be on the air through September 6th. It’s a fitting end for Rescue Me, as the show will end the week of the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and the final nine episodes are sure to be some captivating television.
  • FX will be debuting a new drama this fall, which is likely to be Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story starring Connie Britton. The show will be airing on Wednesday nights, as ratings giant Sons of Anarchy will be on Tuesdays and some formation of Archer/The League/It’s Always Sunny will be on Thursdays.
  • There will also be a new drama launched in winter, taking the place of recently canceled Lights Out. Mitovich reports that it’s looking like that will be comic adaptation Powers or southern organized crime drama Outlaw Country that join Archer, Justified, and a new comedy this midseason.
  • Additionally, Deadline is reporting that said new comedy, which will bring the channel’s comedy stable to six, is likely to be Townies, the story of two 15 year old best friends who raise themselves that is co-written by three It’s Always Sunny writers.
