Now for another piece of casting news for season 2 of Game of Thrones. The first came last week with the announcement that Tudors star Natalie Dormer had joined the cast (read more here). Today, Blastr and other sites are reporting that former Doctor Who star Christopher Eccleston might snap up a role for next season of Game of Thrones.
Even if you're not a Doctor Who fan, you should recognize Eccleston from various other roles, including the movie G.I. Joe and the TV show Heroes.
Who could Eccleston be playing if he does join the cast? The name floating around is Stannis Baratheon. You might recall that after King Robert died towards the end of season 1, Ned Stark had claimed that Robert's brother Stannis was the rightful heir to the Iron Throne (as Joffrey - who did become king - was not Robert's biological child). Stannis didn't appear in season 1, just as he didn't appear in the first book, but he will definitely be appearing next season as the fight over the Iron Throne becomes more fierce.
The other character Eccleston could play is Balon Greyjoy, who is a rival of Stannis and who would also like to take on the role of king.
Rumors also abound that Scottish actor Tony Curran (The Pillars of the Earth, 24) could also join the cast for season 2 of Game of Thrones, although what role he could take on is not yet known.
In other words, let the Game of Thrones season 2 casting rumors begin!

He'd be one hell of a good Roose Bolton, I think.
he doesn't match the description of Stannis physically speaking , Roose seems to be a better choice for him

I like him as Roose, but definitely not a Stannis. Wouldn't really work as a Greyjoy either. Looking at his face, I see Ser Dontos.
i 3rd the roose bolton, its kind of a small role for a big time actor though so i dont know. the thing is, i don't think of him as Stannis because he doesn't have that 'hard' look that is described in the books. like if you made his skin pale and made his hair longer he'd be basically how i imagined roose bolton. i wonder if we will get the scene where he's nude on his bed and arya is picking the leeches off him :O
Tony Curran could be Jaqen H'gar.
I think he'd make a good Davos Seaworth. If he wants a longer role, that'd be one of the ones he'd be perfect for.
Wait…he is in the first book…he's on the king's council, but then leaves for Dragonstone…
He's only mentioned in book one. You never see him.
You know, I was reading Second book and I realized I was reading Qhoren Halfhand's lines in Eccleston's voice. Since then I can't help but picture him in that role. It would certainly fit him well.
