After the record setting numbers of this week’s Game of Thrones premiere, it was only a matter of time before HBO said that yes, the show would be back next season. A formality, really. Now, HBO has done that and then some, announcing that Game of Thrones will be returning for season five and season six.
Really, barring any unforeseen worldwide catastrophe, HBO will air Game of Thrones until all George RR Martin’s books are covered. Even the ones that aren’t out yet. And once again, this puts more pressure on the man to get those books finished. He’s been working on the Winds of Winter for a while, but he has to finish up the last two books lest the show catch him.
Previously, he took quite a long while to get the other titles out, but now with the enormous popularity of the franchise, pressure’s on. Rushing an author is never good, but I’m not sure what other choice they have at this point. They can’t simply take like a three year break and wait for him to complete the series. We’ll see what happens.
