"The majority of the episode is focused on several interconnected stories and only contains three musical numbers. I'm kind of on the fence right now about whether I like this new direction (pun not intended) for Glee, so I'll let you be the judge after the episode airs."
Um…isn't this what the entire first season (the critically acclaimed first season) was about? Focus on the characters, their emotions, and relating to the audience? That's why the second season did so poorly, and many fans walked away from the series. A focus on the characters isn't a new direction, but a call back to the old; to what made the series great in the first place.
Actually, I can't speak for anyone else, but I thought that the first season (which I did enjoy) contained the best balance between musical numbers and character stories. I think that season 2 went too far in one direction (musical numbers, big episodes, guest stars, etc). Now I think that season 3 might be going too far in the other direction (focusing more on character stories). I don't know if they can strike that proper balance again, but I'm hoping they do.
