Glee News: Darren Criss to Become Regular & Superbowl Episode Theme

I absolutely loved Darren Criss' debut appearance on Glee last night.  In addition to his wonderful interaction with Kurt (Chris Colfer), Criss' character, Blaine, is a welcome addition to the cast musically.

After the internet gushed over his performance of "Teenage Dream", his guest spot last night also seemed to be enjoyed by many.  It's no surprise, therefore, that Ausiello is reporting that the Glee bosses are currently in talks to promote Darren Criss to a series regular for the third season:

The promotion for Criss - who initially came on board the Fox hit as a recurring - would likely kick in at the start of the show's already-greenlit third season. This would mark the first regular TV gig for Criss whose biggest pre-Glee TV role was an arc on ABC’s short-lived Eastwick. He first found fame on the Internet as the star of YouTube viral hit A Very Potter Musical.

Criss would be a very welcome addition to the regular cast and I hope this works out for him.  Ausiello is also reporting that the post-Superbowl Glee episode may not be a tribute episode after all.  Rumors that a Michael Jackson or Bruce Springsteen tribute episode was in the works for the coveted post-Superbowl spot have been circulating for a little while now, but it seems like the Glee producers might have been listening to some of the blow-back lately after the Britney Spears episode:

Word is Ryan Murphy & Co. are leaning toward staging a “regular” episode of Glee after SB XLV featuring music from a variety of artists rather than a stunt-heavy hour, a-la Britney and Madonna.

Of course, given that Glee will likely draw its biggest audience in its two-year history, you can bet there will be at least a few bells and whistles.

A Glee rep declined to comment.

So what do you think?  Personally, I thought the Britney Spears episode was a mess.  I loved the performances, but the rest of it felt incomprehensible.  I think Glee is a better show when it focuses on regular storylines (like the bullying against Kurt in last night's episode), then when it tries to stage a musical extravaganza.
