News continues to pour in about Glee's upcoming third season. We already know that several cast members will be leaving the show after season 3 because their characters will be graduating (read more here) and that the show has hired a proper writing staff. We've also reported on other spoilers concerning various characters (read more here). But Ryan Murphy has been busy spilling more secrets about Glee, so we've decided to put together a collection of recent spoilers.
The most shocking of them is up first....
Is Chord Overstreet Off Glee?
News has surfaced recently that Chord Overstreet, who plays Sam and joined the cast in season 2, will not be a regular next season. Word also got out that Darren Criss and Harry Shum Jr. (Blaine and Mike) have both been promoted to series regulars, but Overstreet's Sam is out, although there is a possibility that he could make occasional guest spots next season. This seems like a very curious move considering the producers were originally talking about exploring Sam and Mercedes' budding relationship, which was hinted at in the season 2 finale. This is also curious given the fact that Sam was introduced in season 2 to eventually help bridge the gap left by departing cast members after next season.
There's been no word yet on why this decision was made.
Update: TV Line has quoted Ryan Murphy as saying: "If Chord wants to appear on Glee, the choice is his. The Glee writers like his Sam character and have plans to write for him. He and his reps have been told that he is welcome back to Glee, and everyone hopes he will show up on Aug. 10 when filming begins." Of course, that doesn't really answer the question of whether - or how much - we'll see Chord in next season. Murphy is quick to point out that he simply wasn't promoted to a series regular, but the entire situation seems very vague at this point.
The Glee Project & Sue's New Rival
The winner of Oxygen's new reality show, The Glee Project, will be appearing in the season 3 premiere and the show has decided to focus Sue's attentions on a new rival this year: The Glee Project winner who comes in as the new Glee character. Murphy told THR: "Sue is going to hate the person and will try to destroy them at all costs. I think she’ll hate that person more than the glee club. She’s had enough of the glee club and will turn her savagery toward the winner of The Glee Project and the Obama administration. I think that’s what she’s going to do."
Back to the Season 1 Formula of Episode Scheduling
According to an interview Murphy gave to TV Guide, they have decided to go back to the formula used in season 1, with the show having both a fall and spring semester. Once the fall semester concludes, the show will be on hiatus for a while and then return with a slew of new episodes.
New Focus for the Show: Characters, One Tribute Episode & No Big Guest Stars
Murphy likes a lot of aspects of season 2, he told TV Guide, but he has promised a renewed focus on storyline, instead of tribute episodes: "The mantra for this year is: Story, story, story, character, character, character. I think last year we did so many big events that we didn't have a lot of big arcs, we had a couple. I just try to be really humble about it. If people love it, they love it. If they don't? I'm sorry, I don't know, I did my best! But I can say, now that we're breaking and plotting, I do feel like Season 3 sort of has that sprinkling of "This is the best season we've done" — I can just feel it."
Murphy has also stated to THR that there will be no big guest stars in season 3 and only one tribute episode, for a big star that he's apparently been going after since the beginning, although we don't know who it is.
