Before Glee ended its second season, it delivered up an unexpected surprise: the start of a relationship between Sam and Mercedes. Fans seemed excited to see this play out, but a shock was delivered over the summer: Chord Overstreet's character, Sam, wouldn't be returning to Glee when the show started its third season.
Fast forward to a few months later, and Sam has returned to McKinley High, albeit in a guest star capacity. But Mercedes has moved on with a fellow student on the football team. Sam isn't too happy about that, though, and has made it a point to tell Mercedes he's determined to win her back at any cost.
Part of his "winning back" plan comes into effect when Glee returns from its holiday hiatus on January 17. In the episode entitled "Yes/No", Sam joins the swim team to impress Mercedes. And love is in the air during the episode. Mr. Schue asks the glee club kids to help him propose to his girlfriend Emma. Glee will also be reenacting a scene from the movie Grease, when the kids tackle the song "Summer Nights". It looks like Sam and Mercedes might give their friends and the audience some insight into their ill-fated summer romance.

Not much interesting in a love triangle with Mercedes, Marcus, and Sam. We don't really have enough background with Mercedes and Marcus and have not had enough of a chance to examine their relationship or Mercedes relationship with Sam to get too invested in this story line.
