FOX’s Gotham Gets a New, Lengthy Preview

Ready for the most extensive, most promising look at FOX’s Gotham yet? Warner Bros. has just released a new UK spot for the show, which is coming to that country’s Channel 5 later this year. It’s introduced by James Gordon himself, Benjamin McKenzie, and is the best spot I’ve seen for the show to date.

The two-and-a-half minute trailer shows partners Bullock and Gordon trying to take down Gotham’s organized crime, and spotlights a few of the young villains they’ll come across including Catwoman, Poison Ivy, Penguin and the Riddler. The main villain of the show is crime lord Fish Mooney, however, who isn’t exactly a comic icon.

The show has to walk a fine line with the original source material, as chronology is sure to get screwed up with all the various character ages. I’m still not sure it was the best idea to include pre-teen Bruce Wayne as an actual character, but with the Wayne’s murder being central to the entire series, perhaps that was inevitable. Still, no one wants to see Batman as a weepy 11-year-old, do they?

I have high hopes for this, mainly because Ben McKenzie is fantastic in everything from The OC to Southland, and I can’t wait to see what he does with Jim Gordon here. I hope it won’t be too procedural, given that it’s on FOX, as a Gotham case-of-the-week, isn’t really what I want to see. Less Mentalist, more Hannibal.
