On October 28, Grey's Anatomy is trying a new format - the episode will be shot like a documentary. The premise of the episode is that a documentary crew comes to the hospital to film after the brutal shooting.
A documentary film crew visits the hospital six months after the shooting to document the road to recovery for doctors and patients. The camera lenses follow Derek, Owen, Mark & Callie as they ambitiously perform a rare arm transplant surgery, Meredith helps Cristina put on a brave face for the cameras, and Bailey's patient, Mary, returns for her surgery -- which marks the first time they've all seen of each other since that fateful day
Executive Producer Shonda Rhimes spoke with EW and shared some insights about this special episode of Grey's Anatomy, which sees the return of Mandy Moore and Ryan Devlin. She stated that we'll get a new perspective into the characters in this episode:
“You actually feel like you’re getting a behind-the-scenes look at our characters’ lives,” suggests series creator Shonda Rhimes. “You see our characters in a very different way, because we’re approaching them in a very different way.”
But don't expect the episode to be a gimmick. Rhimes and the script writer ensured that the storyline will progress throughout the episode so that it's not a one-off. In addition to wanting to bring Mandy Moore back in order to put an end to her storyline, Rhimes revealed the following spoilers:
Through the use of confessionals, we discover how truly unhinged Cristina has become. “She has a long journey [before her],” says Rhimes. “But when she gets a little bit better, she comes roaring back.”
Callie and Arizona make “a huge decision” that will usher them “into a new chapter,” teases Rhimes.
