Shonda Rhimes Says Derek and Meredith Could Break Up in Season 11 of Grey’s Anatomy

Derek and Meredith Grey's

Fans of Derek and Meredith are in for a lot of drama in the upcoming season of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, as the couple works through the major issue that they faced at the end of last season with Meredith refusing to give up her medical career in Seattle in order to follow Derek to his dream job in D.C. However, while the duo have been able to always beat whatever problems they dealt with in the past, this time may be different, according to Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes. In fact, she will not promise fans that Derek and Meredith will make it out of this season still together, meaning that divorce could be on the horizon for the once happily married couple.

“I’m not going to say that Meredith and Derek are never going to break up,” Rhimes said to TVLine, who exclusively broke the news. “I’m not going to say that simply because we’re writing a story and we’re on this long, long journey. I’ve learned never to say absolutes about anything anymore. People always say, ‘Seven seasons ago you said… ‘ Well, I didn’t think we’d still be here.”

However, don’t be too scared Grey’s Anatomy fans. Rhimes also stated that she is much more invested a couple that tries hard to work through their issues together rather than one that simply just gives up and calls it quits. Long story short: Derek and Meredith will be fighting with each other, but they’ll also be fighting to keep their marriage alive.

“I was not interested in telling the story of a really good marriage that breaks up because of this,” Rhimes said. “There’s work involved in keeping an amazing marriage amazing, and I would personally like to watch what happens when [they try] to fight through it.”

Grey’s Anatomy, which premiered in March 2005, will be entering its eleventh season this fall. When asked at the Television Critics Association summer press tour if this would be the final season for the medical drama, Rhimes responded by saying that Grey’s Anatomy “is still the No. 1 drama on television, so no. Right now, as long as I am still interested in what happens next, I am not thinking about that.”

Grey’s Anatomy returns to ABC on Thursday, Sept. 25 at its time, 8 p.m.
