Here’s a bit of fun “what if” alternate history. According to TotalFilm from way back when, Mads Mikkelsen was in discussions to play Thor’s 2 main villain, the Dark Elf Malekith, but dropped out because production was taking too long, and he signed on for his role as Hannibal Lecter instead on NBC’s Hannibal.
While Thor 2 was a perfectly acceptable film, I think it’s safe to say that Mikkelsen made the right call here. Hannibal was the best new show of its premiere year, and it was hard to even tell which actor was playing Malekith in Thor: The Dark World (it was former Doctor Who Christopher Eccelson). The article also said that David Slade left a possible reboot of Daredevil (which has since turned into a Netflix show) in order to direct the Hannibal pilot. I guess everyone really saw something in the show, and they were right.
This goes to show that film doesn’t have the automatic appeal over TV that it used to. Hannibal has raised the profile of Mikkelsen more than a latex-wearing role in Thor 2 ever could have. Many actors are choosing TV over film these days, and the medium is expanding like never before. It’ s kind of cool to see if you’re in this business.
