The Lemon Breeland that we saw in the first two episodes of this season of Hart of Dixie isn’t the Lemon Breeland that we had grown accustomed to. Stripped of her relationship with George (and the status that came along with being a part of BlueBell’s First Couple), Lemon had humbled herself quite a bit and figured out that she couldn’t rely on a man for her happiness. Half of her life had been consumed by planning to be Mrs. George Tucker; beyond that, Lemon had no idea who she was, nor had she been allowed to try new things by her ever-protective father. After her waitress job ended up not working out, you had to wonder where she would go next and if there was a regression in her future.
In the preview for tonight’s episode of Hart of Dixie, titled “If It Makes You Happy,” Lemon’s newfound desire for independence and ambitious streak have taken a backseat now that George has begun dating again. Rather than continuing trying to establish an identity of her own, she enlists Annabeth to try to find a guy for her to be in a relationship with to “one up” George and “win” their break-up in the court of BlueBell opinion. One of Lemon’s main faults is her focus on the opinions of others; be it a result of being raised in a gossip-y small town or something that Brick drilled into her head from a young age, Lemon would rather come off a certain way than be truly happy with herself/her life, hence the sudden desire to not come off like the “old maid” of their break-up.
Although Lemon continuing to improve her sense of self-worth and becoming more of her own woman has been one of my favorite storylines this season on Hart of Dixie, a backslide was expected. That much change can very rarely go completely smoothly, particularly since Lemon has been a certain way and in a certain situation for such a long time. Hopefully she comes to see that at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what other people think about her, either way. It matters what she thinks about herself.
Hart of Dixie airs tonight at 8:00 on The CW. You can check out my recap of last week’s episode here, as well as photos from tonight’s episode here and the TVOvermind Hart of Dixie discussion forum here.
Do you think that Lemon should be trying to date just because George is? Which Lemon Breeland do you prefer: season one or season two? Will she find a guy to go out with on such short notice?
