Hawaii Five-0 Season 5 Episode 25 Review: “A Make Kaua (Until We Die)”

Hawaii Five-0

Part two of Hawaii Five-0‘s fifth season finale opens very far away from Hawaii in North Dakota. A military convoy is hijacked and their contents transported to Hawaii. The team will soon find out that what was on the plane to Hawaii was a stolen nuclear bomb.

Back in Hawaii, Chin finally confronts Adam over his association with the Yakuza. Adam confesses that while he is out of the business, his father’s ties run deep. In order to be 100% out of the Yakuza for good, Adam needs to give up his legitimate businesses as well, leaving him with nothing. Which is exactly what he did, and Chin is grateful that he made the sacrifice for Kono. Chin’s family woes aren’t over, though, since his criminal brother-in-law is still on the island and apparently back to business as usual.

Relationship woes are not something you want to deal with when you’re trying to get to a wedding and save the island. As preoccupied as Steve McGarrett is, he is nowhere near prepared when former love Catherine returns to Hawaii for Kono’s wedding. Steve tries to play it cool, but an overprotective Danny thinks it’s a good idea to find out if Catherine’s stay is just a drive-by or more permanent. Either way, it’s good to have her back considering the crisis Five-0 has to stop.

Five-0 finds out that Josh Bennett, the man who stole the nuclear device, has borderline personality disorder and issues with the military, so he is libel to sell the device to anyone. Catherine discovers that the most likely buyer is a war criminal named Sameer Khadaad, and they are too late to stop the deal. That really doesn’t matter, since Khadaad is found dead the next day, and Bennett’s plan was always to set the bomb off on Hawaii in order to make a point about “feeling safe” while the Middle East can still attack the U.S. It’s now all hands on deck, even the half-dressed, dolled up bride.

By the time Five-0 finds the nuclear bomb, there is no way to stabilize it. With less than 30 minutes on the timer, and Pearl Harbor more than 30 minutes away, Danny and Steve have to get the nuclear device out into the water. Using Kamekona’s helicopter, they transport the device in the air away from the island. Danny begins to panic (and argue with Steve, true to form), but Steve refuses to let his best friend give up when he has not one, but two children depending on him. They do succeed in getting the bomb away from the city safely.

The day’s not over, though, the team still has a wedding to get to! Kono and Adam finally make it to their wedding with no more crises in sight. It’s who they don’t see coming that is most shocking, as Gabriel makes an uninvited appearance when Chin runs to fetch the wedding rings. Gabriel offers Chin a partnership for whatever he makes in his criminal activities since a) they are family, and b) Gabriel wants to stay in Hawaii and not be on the run. Naturally, Chin refuses, and expects to be shot for his refusal, but instead Gabriel disappears.

Questions for next season: How will Danny adjust to being a father to two children? How will Kono and Adam adjust to married life? Will Catherine stick around? What hell does Gabriel have in store for Chin? We’ll see what the future holds for Five-0 next season.
