The Impressive Scope of HBO’s Amazon Prime Deal

In yet another move to go directly head-to-head with Netflix, HBO has just announced an enormous dump of their content onto Amazon Prime exclusively.

The deal covers as follows:

  • All seasons of revered classics such as The Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, Rome and Six Feet Under, and of recent favorites such as Eastbound & Down, Enlightened and Flight of the Conchords
  • Epic miniseries, including Angels in America, Band of Brothers, John Adams, The Pacific and Parade’s End
  • Select seasons of current series such as Boardwalk Empire, Treme and True Blood
  • Hit original movies like Game Change, Too Big To Fail and You Don’t Know Jack
  • Pedigreed documentaries including the Autopsy and Iceman series, Ghosts of Abu Ghraiband When the Levees Broke
  • Hilarious original comedy specials from Lewis Black, Ellen DeGeneres, Louis CK and Bill Maher

Girls, Veep and The Newsroom will see episodes hit Amazon three years after they air, the deal also states. HBO is keeping Game of Thrones and True Detective close to their chest, for obvious reasons.

The move is significant because it’s more or less like a huge chunk of HBO Go now exists in a Netflix type service, which obviously doesn’t require a cable subscription. Obviously those wanting to catch new HBO shows live (or live within three years, apparently) will have to subscribe to the channel through traditional means, but it’s a pretty big move for both HBO and Netflix. HBO seems to realize licensing is in their best interest, and Amazon Prime just got a hell of a lot of great new shows in their line-up. Like, look through that list. Even if Game of Thrones is absent and Girl and Veep are years away, The Sopranos? The Wire? Deadwood? Six Feet Under? Band of Brothers? There are barely any bad shows here at all, and these additions alone might make Prime worth signing up for (if you don’t have it already).

This is a pretty big deal not only for the two companies involved, but the industry as a whole. It shows even ancient cable giants are not immune to changing trends, and perhaps they’re going to start shifting with the times a bit more. We can only hope.
