Julianne Moore to Star in New HBO Series Dope?

julianne mooreJulianne Moore will be playing Sarah Palin in HBO’s adaptation of Game Change, based on the Mark Halperin and John Heilemann book that details the 2008 US presidential election. Deadline is reporting that Moore could be extending her time at HBO as it appears that a new Todd Haynes project could land Moore as the lead.

The project in question is Dope; a novel written by Sara Gran that tells the story of Josephine “Joe” Flannigan, a heroin addict who decides to get clean and turns to private eye work to get by. Set in 1950s New York the streets are full of dope (as the title of the novel suggests) making this decision to work in a business surrounded by drugs all the more precarious.

Todd Haynes recently adapted the Depression-era Mildred Pierce for HBO and has previously directed Moore in Safe and another 1950s drama Far From Heaven (Moore was nominated for an Oscar for this role). Mildred Pierce has scored an impressive 21 Emmy nominations this year and it wouldn’t be surprising if the same would happen for Dope, especially if Julianne Moore does indeed sign on. I can already imagine how exquisite this show will look as Haynes has a real eye for detail and we have already seen how amazing Julianne Moore looks in this time period (and generally all time periods).

Julianne Moore looks set then to be another big name film actor to be courted by television (and particularly HBO) like Kate Winslet before her. Recently Moore guest appeared on 30 Rock for 5 episodes, but this will be the first series that would be led by the actress. The conversation at the Hollywood Reporter Emmy drama actress roundtable focused at one point on the quality of roles for females in television rather than film, especially for older women and this looks set to be another occasion where this idea is proved correct.

Is this a show that you would watch? Any other big name film actors that you would like to see on the small screen? Let us know in the comments below.

Not to nitpick, but it's Todd Haynes, not Todd Hayes.

This is interesting news, though; the material sounds intriguing, even without Moore's attachment. I wonder who Haynes has in mind for the lead role.
