It’s an age-old tradition, the UK makes a great show and we in America think our audience can’t understand the funny accent, so we should remake it. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, and we’re about to find out which will happen when the USA remakes “Utopia.”
David Fincher and HBO have landed the US remake of the British show. What’s it all about? Via THR:
“The HBO story revolves around the die-hard fans of an iconic underground graphic novel who are suddenly launched into their own pop-culture thriller when they learn that the author has secretly written a sequel. Unfortunately, the new manuscript is much more than just a book and those on the hunt for it suddenly find themselves in a game of shifting loyalties, conspiracy and shocking twists as the true meaning of the book is slowly revealed.”
It’s a strange show, and while it’s definitely amassed a cult following in its limited run, I can’t say I’d call it a favorite of mine. If we’re going for British conspiracy/sci-fi, I’d much rather watch Orphan Black or Black Mirror. Still, an American version could be good, and Fincher has been known to improve originals (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). We’ll see how this goes.
