From the NBC Press Tour – Heroes Not Renewed – Yet

Jon Lachonis January 15, 2009 12

heroes_lTVOvermind has received a transcript from the NBC press tour where some renewals were announced today. Conspicuously absent from the list was Heroes, NBC’s embattled fantasy/serial. Once the networks flagship brand, Heroes has brought critical scorn to the peacock for it’s ritalin inspired plot structure. The reporters in attendance were all over the omission with tough questions. Read on to find out exactly what they were told.

Pay close attention to the answer to this first question. Angela Bromstad clearly indicates that the future of Heroes is strong, but they are waiting to make the course correction is a success before renewing. Surprisingly, noone caught the scent of this and went deeper into what Angela’s definition of ‘on track’ is if she considers it ‘off track’ now.

QUESTION: “Heroes” is presumably a pretty expensive show and has dropped quite a bit in the ratings. How secure is it at this point?

ANGELA BROMSTAD: “Heroes” is very secure. We have a great relationship with Tim Kring. Again I was at the studio when we developed that show. And I think that what’s important is that we never lose sight of being responsible in production. And television is about the characters and the writing, and we want to make sure that that show is on track. But very secure.

QUESTION: Continuing on “Heroes” for a minute, some of the points that some people have made in the last few days is that some series speed up their plotline too fast. They keep saying it’s got to be a big hit this week, big hit this week, and the story kind of gets out of control, too much happening. And “Heroes” is one show that people tend to say that about, that so much happens in every hour that it just kind of spins wildly out of control. What do you think? Do you wish that “Heroes” would slow down in some ways or not do so much all the time?

ANGELA BROMSTAD: I think that — Tim and I have talked about it. I think that what Tim is interested in doing is getting back to the core of the show and that it’s these ordinary people with extraordinary powers and that they may have taken on too much in terms of characters and multiple storylines.
QUESTION: Angela, just following up, one last thing on the “Heroes” thing and then another question. I understand you say “Heroes’” future is strong, but you did just today renew “The Office” and “30 Rock” and “The Biggest Loser” for other seasons. “Heroes” is a show you own, so why not pick up “Heroes” now, especially given the complicated storylines?

ANGELA BROMSTAD: You know what? We picked up “Office” and “30 Rock.” There’s no indication in that announcement that “Heroes” will not be picked up. Those are just the announcements that we made today.

You can feel the tension! I have faith that the Heroes writers will straighten things at. Besides, it wasn’t THAT bad.

I agree with you Hiro’sGrrl. Hero’s will course, correct, I think and another season should be a given. Whether or not it goes any farther than that, I think, will depend greatly on the ratings next year, but I say it at least gets that shot.

Im so relived to read this. Of course they wouldn’t renew every show on the same day. It would just piss off those who aren’t being renewed (night rider or friday night lights) Im so glad they like Heroes. Now I just gotta worry about Chuck.

I, for one, think the NBC rep, Angela Bromstad, did a horrible job of defending why Heroes wasn’t on the renewal list. She would have been better off to remain silent, as she just threw gasoline on this already towering inferno.

Oh, CuttingEdge, if Chuck doesn’t get a renewal, I will be forced to rock in a corner for at least a week…

Please do not bring Heroes back. Let it die. When it first came on I gave it 3 seasons, if it dies now I will be right and can rub that in my friend’s face.

    Please die Heroes, please die.

I have to agree that Heroes should just die out. I was a huge fan of the show and to see it slip so badly this past season was disappointing.
