Paranoia and the inability to process it properly crushed the career of Carrie Mathison. Last season on Emmy-nominated Homeland, the FBI agent couldn’t let go of Nicholas Brody, a war hero that she suspected of having ties to terrorist Abu Nazir. It all but consumed her, filling her every waking thought and pushing any inclination she had about taking care of herself into the furthest corners of her mind. Unfortunately, Carrie proved to be correct in her hunch, but no one would listen due to the mania that came from not taking her anti-psychotic medication, a mania that left her in electro-convulsive therapy at the end of the season.
The trailer for the second season of Homeland is all about paranoia; from the haunting cover of “Every Breath You Take” to the scattered, jumpy images of a blood-covered Brody struggling to be both Congressman and terrorist, it’s a sign the pressure might be getting to the normally unflappable soldier. You’d think that with Carrie gone from the agency and no one else having picked up on his scent, Brody would have an easy time inserting his agenda into the legislative conversation. He doesn’t have anyone around to pick apart his every move and turn of phrase, but the hint of apprehension at the end of the first season might not have been a hint after all. It might be an indication that Brody’s allegiance will be up for grabs this season and the fate of the country could hang in the balance, depending on which way he leans.
The second season of Homeland premieres Sunday, September 30th at 10:00 on Showtime, where it will follow the seventh season premiere of Dexter.
