House 7.07 "A Pox On Our House?" Review

Finally!

After six borderline excruciating episodes, House is finally back on track. I was honestly about to lose my faith in this show, but they proved that they still got it. Because “A Pox on Our House?” was nothing short of amazing. It reminded me a little (okay, a lot) of ER’s season 8 finale “Lockdown”, which had basically the same case, but they managed to spin and turn and confuse our heads with that game of is-it-smallpox-or-not like masters.

This week’s case presented a family who had gone scuba diving a few days before in the Bermudas. The daughter found an object on a sunken slave ship and when she brought it back to the surface, it broke and cut her hand. She started developing symptoms that looked a lot like smallpox. They isolate her, but soon dad starts showing symptoms as well, but much worse. They both deteriorate fast and it was a race against time to find out what was really killing them.

It got to a point that House wanted to run a test on dad, but the CDC guy wouldn’t let him in the isolation room. House, being the arrogant bastard that he is, went in, anyway, and got himself in a potentially life threatening situation because he couldn’t go back out and had to watch dad die from a disease that he could have possibly have contracted when he went into the room without the isolation suit.

When all seemed to be lost, Masters (Amber Tamblyn – have I mentioned how much I love her?) cracks the puzzle by translating the captain’s diary. Apparently, the captain’s cat was also sick and died on the ship and smallpox is an exclusively human disease. Therefore, it couldn’t be smallpox. In the end, they find out it’s actually cat pox, which is completely treatable.

The level of tension and suspense in this episode was amazing. It was a joy to see one of my favorite shows back to its usual awesome self.

A+, House. With honors.

Welcome back! We’ve missed you!
