Obvious spoilers ahead for those who haven’t seen the finale of How I Met Your Mother. Many fans were displeased with the ending of the show because it was revealed that the long-awaited mother, Tracy, had actually been dead for years as Ted was telling the story to his kids. Rather, the entire tale was meant to show how he was really in love with Robin all along, and was seeking his kids’ permission for him to ask her out. Not exactly the turn most fans were hoping for.
Things could have gotten even more heart-wrenching than they were, as there was almost a funeral scene for Tracy in the show, but it ended up being cut as it was too overly emotional.Alison Hannigan talked about the scene to TVLine:
“They were like, ‘No, it’s just too gut-wrenching’. And I was like, ‘That’s what I want. I want my heart ripped out and slammed on the floor and, like, stomped on!’
I think many in the audience felt that way anyway. She continues:
“[I think it] would have been better for the audience, so that then they can process, ‘Oh, [Ted] mourned. He got closure’ – and then they’d be happy that [he and Robin] got together. Rather than be like, ‘Oh, wait. She died? What? They’re together, huh?’ And credits. That’s what I think was too fast.”
Put that way, I think it makes sense given how rushed the final felt otherwise. It’s too much to change the entire premise of the show in the last five minutes like they did, and it’s why so many fan recuts are so popular because they simply tweak the ending into something that makes more sense. I’m not sure a funeral would have solved all the problems with the ending as the turn is still quite severe, but I think it would have made it slightly less abrupt at the very least.
