Mad Men Renewal Conditions Revealed, End Date Set

It's been rumored, almost since the show's inception, that Mad Men will have its curtain call sooner rather than later, in the interest of preserving creative integrity (we all know what happens to shows that stay on too long). Now, after four seasons of watching Don Draper's self-destruction/rise from the ashes, we finally have a milestone set for when AMC's first scripted drama will end: after season 7.

We're still three years out from that date, and a lot could happen in three years. But, according to creator Matthew Weiner, that's the plan. "I'm still going to put everything I have into every episode, but seven seasons seems like the right length for the life of the show and I'm very excited knowing that I have that canvas to paint on," Weiner shared after revealing that he's signed on for two more years of the show.

The other parts of the deal with AMC have also been revealed. Any cast changes that were rumored (AMC reportedly wanted Weiner to drop two cast members a season) will be done for "creative reasons," while product placement for the series will remain the same (that is to say, incredibly high, but in a way that benefits the story).

Episode lengths are also going to be trimmed by two minutes, save for the premiere and finale, which will remain at normal lengths (a little over an hour). Extended "final cuts" of the episodes will be available online a little over a week after the episodes air.

Weiner says he is "just so pleased" with the way things worked out. Are you?
