Modern Family is such a big critical and audience hit for ABC, I suppose it’s not the most unreasonable thing in the world to hear that they’re considering a spin-off of the show. Deadline reports that a few ideas are being tossed around about what such a project might look like.
Don’t worry, at least for now, it doesn’t seem like one of core family groups would be moving across the country and striking out on their own. At least so far, the most prominent concept is one that feature’s Rob Riggle’s Gil Thorpe character, you know, Phil’s zany and underhanded real estate rival?
We know almost nothing about Thorpe, and he’s supposed to be an intensely dislikable character so I’m not quite sure how he’d work as a lead. Spin-offs are usually based around characters with more prominence than him. Like it would be The Haley and Alex Show where the two girls go off to college together. I would watch that.
If the spin-off does happen executive producers Paul Corrigan and Brad Walsh would write and helm the project with co-creator Steve Levitan having some role in its existence.
