This week, the Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage act and also Prop 8 in California, both of which are good news for gay couples nationwide, but have little pressing relevance to TV. Until now.
Since the death of both of these controversial pieces of legislation, we now may end up getting to see that fabulous wedding we’ve always thought about on Modern Family. Yes, Cameron and Mitchell could have an actual wedding at last.
Executive producer Christopher Llyod talked about the idea to EW.
“It’s a real possibility. It’s certainly something we are contemplating on the show in ways we wouldn’t have in prior seasons. As you can imagine in Cam and Mitchell’s life, they would be feeling that a door has opened that was closed to them. Wouldn’t it be pretty tempting to think about walking through it?”
Simply put, there is no way this won’t happen this season. The show likes to find big events to drive ratings up, and this would certainly qualify. For a while now Cam and Mitchell have been showing America that gay couples have the triumphs and tribulations of straight couples, and their wedding would likely show that the world will not begin to end if gays are able to get married and have weddings.
And honestly, it would probably just be a hilarious episode, as we haven’t seen anything as epic as a big wedding on Modern Family yet. Stay tuned for more details.
