Anytime you bring up mention of a golf movie, or maybe even just golf in particular, there’s a good chance that you’ll eventually be mentioning or even talking about Happy Gilmore. He was a destructive force in the world of golf but he was also funnier than anything that’s come before or since. In fact the only film that could possibly rival the hilarity of Happy Gilmore is Caddyshack, the original, not the sequel.
But how much do you really know about the film?
10. The character was based on a real person.
The character is based off of Adam Sandler’s friend Kyle. Kyle was a hockey player that played with a very big amount of passion and was seen as a rather angry person on the ice.
9. There was almost a different Shooter McGavin.
It was offered to Kevin Costner and coveted by Bruce Campbell. Despite turning it down twice though Chris McDonald was finally convinced that this part was perfect for him.
8. Ben Stiller went uncredited for this movie.
Can you believe that? A perfect villain role and he didn’t even to claim the credit. The other characters in the film don’t even call him by name.
7. Bob Barker did his own stunts.
That is actually Barker in the film mixing it up with Sandler. The old man has studied under Chuck Norris and is most likely able to take Sandler in a real fight if it ever came to that.
6. The fist fight won an award on MTV.
This was the first ever best fight award given out on MTV, but it’s been an award that’s remained ever since. Needless to say it was one of the best points of the movie and one that people still remember amidst gales of laughter.
5. Sandler was nominated for a Razzie award.
Thankfully he didn’t win. The award went to Pauly Shore for Bio-Dome. This is actually an award you DON’T want to get.
4. The movie was a box office smash.
Despite Sandler always playing the man-child that somehow turns his life around this film was actually well-received and might stand as one of the best he’s ever done.
3. It actually made The Price is Right more popular.
The show was already popular in its own right but after its most famous host was shown in a movie of this scope more and more people tuned in to see Bob Barker just for the novelty of it.
2. Sandler is horrible at hockey and golf.
No actual learning took place on this set. You might think that Sandler is getting the hang of the game after a while but in truth he still really stinks at both games. Movie magic, whooo-oooo.
1. Chubbs’ missing hand and arm is an inside joke.
If you remember from Predator Weather’s had his arm blown off by the villain’s blaster. This was a sly nod to that film and most fans didn’t even seem to get it. What was really great about Weathers being in this film though is that it showed that he could do comedy as well as action.
I’ll admit I didn’t know a few of these but they were very interesting to learn.
