Snakes appear as characters in movies more than you may think. These slithering creatures appear in everything from animations to horror films. While some people love snakes, they instill fear in others and it is little wonder because movies often portray snakes in a negative light. Here are five famous movie scenes where a snake is the main character.
1. The Jungle Book
The Jungle Book is one of the best-known and most loved animated films of all time. The snake in this film is called Kaa. Although Kaa appears in many scenes throughout the film, there is one famous scene where he takes the leading role. This if often referred to as ‘Kaa’s hypnosis scene’. Mowgli is new to the jungle but is defiant that he can live alone in this environment while Bagheera, the black panther, argues he can never survive. When Baghaar goes to sleep and Mowgli settles on a branch, Kaa descends from a higher branch and begins to hypnotize the young boy. The original film was released in 1967 and was remade in 2016.
2. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
The Harry Potter series of films are some of the most successful of all time and there are many occasions in these movies when snakes make an appearance. However, there is a particular set of scenes where the snake has a leading role. This is in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets when Harry must defeat The Basilisk. This is a giant snake living in the Chamber of Secrets below the School that is suing the pipe system to travel around. It has already killed and harmed many students and Harry must save Hogwarts from further tragedy.
3. Conan the Barbarian
Snakes play an important role in the storyline of Conan the Barbarian, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Early in the film, Conan has to visit the Tower of Serpents where a cult of snake worshippers live. Conan steals the Eye of the Serpent which is a giant ruby. As he is making his getaway, a giant boa constrictor slithers up behind him. A battle between Conan and the snake ensues, ending when Conan sticks his sword through the head of the serpent. Covered in blood, he decapitates the snake before he leaves.
4. King Kong
There are three releases of King Kong; 1933, 1976, and 2005. Each of these includes the famous snake scene that takes place on Skull Island where King Kong and other giant animals live. When a film crew descends on Skull Island, a young actress is kidnapped and King Kong falls in love with her. When a boa constrictor tries to eat her, King Kong comes to the rescue and battles the snake to save his love.
The snake is one of the main characters throughout this horror movie as it is about a 40-foot anaconda that lives in the Amazon Rainforest. Jennifer Lopes is in the jungle filming a documentary and Paul Serone is a snake hunter who is assisting her. In one of the most famous scenes from the film, Serone ties up Lopes and a member of the film crew, covering them in blood to lure the snake. The plan backfires as the snake opens its jaws wide and swallows Serone whole.
