Let’s face it. Geostorm is certainly not the first nor is the last movie that amplifies some kind of potential threat to our planet. We’ve seen plenty of apocalyptic “the world is ending” kind of films before. With aliens we saw Independence Day and War of the Worlds. With asteroids we saw Armageddon and Deep Impact. With climate we saw The Day After Tomorrow. With earthquakes we saw San Andreas. With disease we saw Contagion. The list goes on. There will always be some movie about the earth ending in some way. Now we’re being introduced to Geostorm.
Gerard Butler plays Jake, a scientist who, along with his brother, Max (Jim Sturgess) is tasked with solving the satellite malfunction that suddenly turn against the world causing tidal waves, tornadoes, and manhole-cover explosions. A slew of folks are here to help Jake out: Secret Service agent Sarah Wilson (Abbie Cornish); Ute Fassbinder, the ISS astronaut who oversees the space station (Alexandra Maria Lara) as well as the President of the United States (Andy Garcia) to name a few.
Will they save the world? I saw 6 seconds of this trailer to say to myself, “sure, a more modern day Day After Tomorrow?” I’ll bite.” And yes, of course they’ll save the world. It’ll be fun to see if this movie does in fact try to tackle climate change in any way possible or if it just tries to be the next blockbuster film with major explosions and special effects. I’ll go with the latter.
