The Top Five Cary Elwes Movie Roles of His Career

Cary Elwes used to be one of the most sought-after actors in movies since he had the charm, the looks, and the screen presence that made him a desirable individual for just about any movie. But after a while he seemed to fall off the map and then when he came back he did a few spoof movies and not much else. But as time has gone on he’s been a part of some seriously memorable movies that have managed to keep him relevant and continue to remind people that he is actually that good. He’s not exactly typecast but his facial expressions as he’s aged have kind of limited him to certain roles it seems.

But hey, he’s still awesome.

5. Liar, Liar-Jerry

It was very easy for him to get outdone by Jim Carrey in this movie since he was a supporting character and nothing else really. Jerry was the poor schlub that was in love with Fletcher’s ex-wife and wanted to start anew when he took them both to Boston for his work. But the trick was that no matter how bad Fletcher was he was still good to his son Max and Jerry just couldn’t compete with that.

4. Twister-Dr. Jonas Miller

Jonas was a jerk with a capital J. He took ideas without giving the proper credit and he thought he knew everything there was to know about storm-chasing. His arrogance however was what eventually got him and his team killed since he didn’t know enough about the particular twister he was going after. When something that big and that forceful is off to your left and has the ability to shift suddenly you should probably keep your distance.

3. Robin Hood: Men In Tights-Robin Hood

Out of the spoof movies he’s done this is probably the best since it’s just hilarious and has so many different tie-ins to other movies that it works on multiple levels. It was never given a whole lot of credit so far as being comedy gold but it did manage to create a cult following among those who enjoyed it. For the most part it took the roll of Robin Hood and made it into one long gag reel, something that Mel Brooks is known quite well for.

2. Saw-Dr. Lawrence Gordon

This was where he kind of got a lot more serious and a lot more intense when it came to the roles he took on. As Dr. Gordon he was still kind of a jerk but he was easier to relate to as a human being thanks to his situation. When he finally proved to be the one that was tough enough to lose a foot and crawl out of the trap he proved that he had what it took to carry on Jigsaw’s legacy, as you see in later movies.

1. The Princess Bride-Westley

Hands down this is his best role ever and the most iconic since he got to be funny and serious all in the same movie. As Westley he was magnificent since he kind of made the movie as the unstoppable force that wouldn’t be deterred from his goal.

He’s still a great actor.
