MTV’s series Buckwild was a wildly popular show that focused on a group of rowdy West Virginia residents. Despite the show’s popularity, it was abruptly cancelled last year. The cancellation came after one of the show’s stars, Shain Gandee, died of carbon monoxide poisoning when his SUV became stuck in a a mud pit, its tailpipe submerged.
The production company behind Buckwild has moved north and is prepared to give us Slednecks, which features a group of young adults in Alaska. It’s everything you’d expect it to be: young kids, loud arguments, partying, snowmobile flipping (and crashing), and polar-plunging.
MTV representatives are adamant about the fact that Slednecks will not be “Buckwild North”. They’ve tried to liken the experience to Jersey Shore and Laguna Beach, a show that features a unique group of people in their live (sort of). The show is called an “ethnographic” reality, but who are we kidding. You know the show’s popularity is going to be based on kids partying, hooking up, and acting foolish. That’s what made Buckwild successful, sadly.
It’ll be interesting to see if the show picks up where the West Virginia version left off.
