John Mulaney is a writer/comedian with a brand new show coming on Fox named after him. But it seems there is a lot of buzz around the fact that the first trailer that dropped today evokes serious memories of Seinfeld. So much so, in fact, that when I first saw the trailer, I thought they were just going the trailer for Mulaney Seinfeld style to attract some attention. Nope, seems that is actually how the show will be, too. While this may be a good thing, it may also be a bad thing. Why? Seinfeld is one high bar to aspire to, my friends.
The show will focus around John Mulaney doing stand up and hanging out with his neighbors who are also his friends (and enemies). Being a former writer for SNL, I have a lot of faith it could be a very funny show, but the Seinfeld vibe is throwing me off. See for yourselves and come to your own conclusions.
I know it is too early to judge Mulaney, so we wont. We have reviewers who will gladly do that once the show goes live soon enough. For now, just try to approach it with an open mind. A lot of sitcoms look alike now-a-days, but that is no reason to write them off before you even see them.
With Mulaney, only time will tell.
