Love Bites Canceled by NBC

It looks like the long, strange journey of Love Bites has finally come to an end.

According to TV Guide, NBC has officially canceled the hourlong anthology, not long after reducing its episode order for a second time (from 9 to 8, after bringing it from 13 to 9 earlier this year). The show has had a pretty unusual existence, having been scheduled to air Thursdays at 10:00 last fall before pregnancy, cast turnover, and a crowded midseason pushed it into summer.

Similar to Love, American Style, Love Bites revolves around three separate vignettes tied together through character, references, and/or theme, with a constant stream of guest stars and a touch of narration to tie things together at the end of each episode. The show featured Becki Newton, Greg Grunberg, and Constance Zimmer as the three main characters and the foundation on which Love Bites rests, as most of the vignettes not featuring them are about people they know or are tied into them somehow.

It's not a surprising move, as the show's not been promoted, the ratings have been poor, and members of the cast are currently signed on to other projects. Plus, Annie had the baby on last week's episode, so it seems like there'll be at least some narrative resolution. It's disappointing, though, because it was nice to see something unusual on broadcast TV and the show had a lot of potential that it could have grown into. I only hope that the show's one-season won't hinder the development of any slightly off-kilter shows in the future.

What do you think about the cancellation of Love Bites? What type of resolution are you hoping to get in tomorrow's finale? Do you think there'll ever be another successful anthology?

  2. Gary says:

Bummed. Our favorite show. The characters are great. Any chance for a resurection?

  3. Heather says:

I am so mad!! I looked forward to this show every Thursday! I am going to cry. I want another station to pick it up.

  4. Lucy says:

LOVED this show! Was so good – just NBC's failure to create better marketing campaigns for it. This was a clever and quirky show – so refreshing. Wishing it'd move the show to fall at a different time.

  5. Kirsten says:

All of my favorite shows always get cancelled or the network ruins them:( This show was really great even if it isn't continued. My favorite show of the summer!

  6. Bonnie says:

Figures any time there is a witty intelligent show on TV they cancel it, I am very disappointed

  7. Baerbel79 says:

This show was the PERFECT summer show. I have said so before. It is light, non-commital, always well acted and written… a delight among all the trite programming that is out there during summer (and the rest of the year, really).

More promotion would have helped, maybe a fall premiere as originally planned would have been helpful, but honestly, this series had great promise to run forever and NBC once again killed off a winner because it missed the audience. I am steaming right now.

  8. Sara says:

i too am super bummed. i stumbled across the show the first week it aired. more publicity would have helped. it was smart. funny. and different than any other show.

  9. christina says:

IM SOOOO SAD I LOVE THIS SHOW AND I THINK ITS SHORT LIVED ,,   ITS FUNNY AND CUTE ME & MY BF WATCH IT EVERY WEEK WE LOVE IT .. I REALLY HOPE IT  COMES BACK IT WOULD BE EVEN BETTER IF IT DIDNT GO AWAY IN THE FIRST PLACE :(

  10. Kuuipo says:

We stumbled upon this show a few weeks ago & because we forgot the name, channel, day & time slot it aired we only got to watch that one (rocket cookies) episode. I mentioned it to my teenage daughter & she remembered "Maddy with the creepy daddy". We googled it, only to read the terrible news of the shows cancellation.

I agree, keep this show going & if promoted correctly it has great potential of being a huge hit. We were fans from only one episode - Imagine the possibilities…

  11. CMurns says:

Figures! This show was too smart for most Americans…all they want is their mindless, crap, reality TV programming! It is a shame that good TV doesn't make it anymore.

  12. Jessica says:

I just caught the first episode flipping through channels, I loved it and have watched it ever since! So bummed it was cancelled, it didnt even get a chance! It was finally a different type of show that was funny and simple and I loved that! Bring it back!

  13. Melissa says:

I am so bummed too!! This show was great!! It seems anytime for the last few years there is something on other than slap stick comedy, reality tv or crime it gets cancelled:( Why don't they give shows more of a chance anymore? 5 episodes…really??

  14. GinaG says:

So bummed! Loved this show and was looking forward to watching it tonight. A lot of fun ti watch – looked forward to seeing how the stories tied together. Well acted and funny. A shame this show goes when there's so much reality trash on. :(

  15. Mari says:

So sad to see this shoe cancelled! I taped every episode and so glad I did. Loved the variety of characters, storylines I could relate to, unique way the characters had the "6 degrees of separation.". I am so tired of reality shows! The writing was clever and it was so fun to watch. How can we get it back?!!!!

  16. keisha says:

I'm so sad I discovered this show on hulu while at work and its my favorite show. I love how all the stories get tied together somehow in the end. I also enjoyed the different guest stars. I hate that this happened and that I'm just hearing about it. Is there like a petition to sign to bring it back? there were som many cliffhangers left. And furthermore will Annie and Matt get together????? Please bring this show back I totally love it.:(

  17. DD says:

This is terrible news!!! I loved how different this show was. It was always so interesting to see how the different characters were connected and different scenes intersected. I can't believe they didn't give it more of a chance and tried to just promote it more. It's better than a lot of the other crap that continues to air. Sadness……

  18. eyedle says:

loved the show….so bummed about the cancellation! but what do ya expect from NBC! it seems like they always cut shows after the 1st few episodes if they don't bring in big #s right away! probably gonna plug in another reality show–>NBC=Nothing But Crap! a.k.a. Nothing But Cancellations!

  19. nikki13 says:

Get a clue NBC, of course your ratings weren't great its summer. Put it on again in the fall at 9 and ratings would increase drastically. I am so tied of getting into a show then it gets canceled. Love Bites, but not as much as NBC. Show me the LOVE!

  20. Samo says:

I loved this show! It was very unique funny And sexy! NBC has made a big mistake! I mean I could have thought if a better marketing plan then all of their team combined! No care and passion for tv marketing will lead to a show getting canceled !

  21. Lizzy says:

I got addicted to the show on Hulu, now I don't know what I'm going to do. The show would have been a big hit if it had a better time slot, or if they promoted it more.

  22. donna says:

SUPER BUMMED! THIS WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE SHOWS!! WHAT IS NBC THINKING CANCELLING THIS???? WE SHOULD ALL START A PETITION OR SOMETHING FOR THIS SHOW TO COME BACK!! THATS HOW PASSIONATE I AM ABOUT THIS SHOW! MAYBE IT NEEDS TO BE A FALL OR WINTER SEASON SHOW, WHILE PEOPLE ARE AT HOME, NOT DURING THE SUMMER WHEN EVERYONE IS OUT ON VACATIONS AND SUCH! MY FIANCEE AND I LOVED WATCHING THIS TOGETHER, IT IS SO LOVELY.

  23. Rosa says:

Just found out this was cancelled…. I'm really upset. This was a great show, it was funny and the plot was great, the writing was clever… if they only promoted it it could have been huge!

  24. Tiff says:

Just found out this was cancelled too.. I was really looking forward to episode 9. My friends and fiance friends really liked this show. One of my fav shows of the year. It just needs to air a little longer to get people to notice it more it could have been successful.

  25. Linda Stuard says:

For once there's a show that's not a "cookie cutter" show (not a crime show, not a reality show and not "America's Got Talent." A refreshing new show with excellent acting and writing and everyone loves it, that's the one you have to cut without even giving it a good shot. Guess I'll go back to watching the news on NBC and then switching to another channel.

  26. Dante says:

What the fuck is wrong with NBC. They are really stupid. Who ever called the shots need to get kicked in the nuts or bunched in the boob. >:O

  27. kerry says:

I'm really upset they cancelled it. With my laptop, I rarely watch shows on the actual television but with this one I eagerly await it each week just because I have to wait a day to watch it. I sit through regular advertisements for this show and I hate ads much like the rest of my generation who tries to find every single way out of watching them. It's one of a kind show and is the only TV show that all my friends enjoy, and I mean all and we normally don't watch anything in common. If it was more publicized, it would be one of the biggest hits on TV. I compare it to a television version of "He's Just Not That Into You" which was a great success I would remind producers. There have only been several episodes out and I am putting the effort into creating this comment and I never do this. If they brought it back, they would not regret it.

  28. kelly says:

I'm very sad that they cancelled Love Bites. In echoing other postings, it was finally a fresh show that was a bit quirky, but also had me honestly laughing. The writing and acting were spot on and it will be missed.

  29. Edmund says:

*SO* disappointed this show was cancelled.

I can't for the life of me figure out why. My gf and I loved watching this show on Thursdays, and I can only assume that we're NBC's target market (20-30 year olds with income).

The thought of this show getting cancelled never even crossed my mind; it was *that* good. I loved this show as much as I did the Big Bang Theory when it originally came out on CBS.

    NBC, please reconsider?

  30. Devan says:

I can't believe they cancelled this show!! It had such a great premise and they just made the mistake of airing it in the summer when most people are too busy to watch TV. I hate that so many good shows have gotten the boot! Stupid network!!!

  31. kristin says:

    PISSED!!!!!!

  32. Megan says:

What a huge disappointment to find out this show was cancelled! In the TV world where there seems to be only reality shows or law/criminal hr long dramas, this was so refreshing, well written, witty, and well acted. Here's to hoping someone will figure out how to get this back on the air, and not just in the summer line up. It would do great running against some of the horrible programming that is out there during the fall and spring line up.

  33. Ana says:

Every other show on NBC except 30 Rock and SNL suck (and SNL goes through totally unmemorable casts). Finally I thought they were luring me back with Love Bites only to see it was cancelled. I'm over NBC. Every show I ever like on this network gets cancelled mid-season. A crappy ass show like The Event, a copycat bite on ABCs Lost, got promoted to death while this original and intelligent series got nothing. There's a reason your heyday ended a decade ago with the end of Seinfeld and Friends. It seems good network executives are over at CBS (something I never thought I'd say!)

  34. Sabah says:

I stumbled on Love Bites on ONDemand and I loved it! I watched it every week and was disappointed that it didn't come on last week…now I know why. I think NBC should reconsider their decision.

  35. antonio says:

great show. like a minature chick flick every week. too bad:-(

btw, does anyone know the artist and the name of the theme song of the show? i wanna say it sounds a little like chrisie hyndes and the pretenders, but i know it can't be them. if anybody knows, please let me know and email me at antonio007@cox.net please. i wanna download it. thanks.

  36. Alike J says:

I fell in LOVE with this show, the clever writing and amazing actors. It is spuch a shame that NBC did not properly promote what could have been one of their best shows. I really hope another network recognizes the potential of the show and pick it up.

  37. alina says:

Ive been searching every Thursday for this show— and when i found this… im upset… i really liked this show….):

  38. Rachel says:

My husband and I have been checking online every friday for the past several weeks hoping for a new episode.. I finally googled weather or not there were going to be any episodes. We are super bummed. It was a GREAT show! We will truly miss it.

  39. JESICA says:

I don't get it why this show got cancelled. This show was AWESOME. I mean like, WHYYYYY?

  40. Maggie G. says:

BRING Love Bites BACK!!!! I have a pretty hectic life but I would make time to watch this show. This and only this show. Perfect casting. It's clever, witty and not anything close to the typical teenage or reality shows. To have the Jersey Shore survive for so long is baffling. What has the world got into?

  41. Doug K says:

Please tell NBC to Bring Back Love Bites! NBC is stupid for cancleing such a smart, funny and clever show. The way I see it they could have endless episodes by introducing just about any number of NBC cast members or characters into the story line of this show.

  42. SMN says:

Really bummed loved this show already. Bring it back!!

  43. tim says:

I loved this show, why do they always cancel the good ones

  44. Karsten Angelkotter says:

I just don't understand it why NBC is cancelling the greatest shows! Smart, well written, something for everyone… can connect with soo many characters and yet they cancel this and Perfect Couples? Seriously is the world just watching dumb reality TV?

Seriously thinking about cancelling TV altogether as every time a good show comes on it gets canceled.

  45. jordan says:

uggggggggg i am so upset i would always look forward to this show its like my all time favorite i dont understand why they woukd cancel such a great show…it was refreshing because it wasn't like everyother show on tv. i mean how many show about criminals and law can there be hhahaha ugh !!!!!!!!! :(

  46. Jason says:

Wow, that sucks. This was a great show. Typical networks, though. For people that don't understand why it got canceled it is simple: lack of viewers. That means less advertising dollars. It will be replaced with some crappy reality TV show because they didn't realize they had a hit on their hands. They just needed to promote it a little. No one has even heard of this show and we found it by accident. I don't think I ever saw a commercial for this show. Shame on you NBC.

  47. Brandi says:

We are just watching LOVE BITES after storing on our DVR. WE LOVE IT!!!! I decided to check its status, though, bc it seems NBC is always cancelling the good shows. So disappointing…

  48. crystal says:

Frustrating. It should have been on in Fall would have been HUGE success. Bad time to start a great show. Sad sad sad…it was smart, funny and interesting!

  49. Kimberly says:

Loved the characters on this show. I don't watch sit-coms – but this one brought me to the t.v. I found it on Hulu – and then started watching it on t.v.

Too bad NBC just can't get its footing…

  50. Fernando says:

It´s too bad the show was cancelled. It was a very funny, smart show. It could have been a new hit had they allowed it to go on. I just discovered it and I´m sad to know they only did eight episodes of it. What a shame!

  51. Hillz says:

They should bring this show back and advertise it. This show was wonderful to watch! Just because they failed to do something shouldn't mean the cancellation of such a good show! They're going to get a lot of hate for this one.

  52. Jennifer says:

I feel bad. I know I am responsible for the demise of this show. Every show I like gets canceled and now I can add this to the long list of shows with great writing and an unusual premise that get canned because I like it. I am sorry, public, because this is yet another show I feel bad about ruining for everyone else. Please don't hate me. I tried not to like it but I did.

  53. Michelle Schultz says:

If anyone at NBC knew a thing about a good tight comedy line up they would have aired Friends with Benefits as a lead in to Love Bites (the longer show)…and oh..I know..PROMOTE the show. The problem with this show was no one knew the name of the show, you couldn't find it, you always stumbled upon it. Well that's what happens when no one puts money into promoting a show. We all know the show Whitney which looks ok, not nearly as good as Love Bites or Friends with Benefits because they promoted the crap out of the show. Had anyone bothered to do this with FWB or LB and aired them in primetime spots and if they were going to move them ADVERTISE the crap out of the move the shows would have stuck and earned the network money..but no..the genius' at NBC didn't do anything to help the show along and then wonder why no one is watching it. What a crock.

  54. Alison says:

I happened upon it one night and loved it! If they knew how to promote their shows then they would have more viewers. Keep what you have and make improvements! What do these people do all day??? Play on facebook???

  55. Glimmer says:

Didn’t even give it a chance. My husband heard about a got me hooked. I don’t know if I have the heart to tell him it’s not coming back. I seem to be watching less and less on NBC. It used to be my favorite network. Sad NBC sad for you.

  56. ann says:

I loved this show and becki newton

  57. Laurence says:

What a great series. That show was a keeper.
    Loved the format.

  58. Malwa says:

so upset, loved the show; they cancelled The Outsourced too. What the heck?!
