Tonight on New Girl: Meet Nick's Dad
In season 2 of New Girl, both Winston's (Lamorne Morris) mom and Jess' (Zooey Dschanel) parents have been introduced and now it is time to meet Nick's (Jake Johnson) dad. Tonight will also see Schmidt (Max Greenfield) attempting to win back Cece's affections and he chooses an unlikely partner in this plan.
Nick has a difficult relationship with his estranged father Walter (guest star Dennis Farina) and Nick is suspicious of Walter's intentions. Jess, being Jess wants to help heal old wounds between the pair but as Walter is a con man, Nick believes that he will end up being used in a gambling scheme. The promo photos do show them at a race track and it looks like Nick's fears might be correct.
After the trip to the cabin last week, Nick is in a vulnerable place as Angie (Olivia Munn) decided that a relationship was not the thing for her after all. It was inevitable that Nick and Angie weren't for the long haul, but I did enjoy what Angie added to the show. These couplings are often meant as a way to develop the main characters and to reveal certain aspects to allow them to move forward; while chaos is fun for a while it showed Nick that he does want something meaningful. There was yet another great Nick and Jess scene and I'm wondering if they are beginning to maneuver the pair to a place where something romantic will happen soon.
One character who has decided to go after love is Schmidt, who despite being rejected by Cece is attempting to win her heart all over again. Schmidt teams up with another one of Cece's ex-boyfriends, Robby (Nelson Franklin) tonight in this attempt. This is an unorthodox approach, but this is Schmidt so anything is possible really. When we spoke to Max Greenfield, he explained this cycle of Schmidt and Cece "I think it’s every time they kind of make up, they get back to like—it seems as though he’ll go after her, he’ll totally screw it up, and then they’ll find a place in friendship, and once they get settled into like a normal friend/relationship, he feels the need to then go after her again."
New Girl has shown on multiple occasions that they can balance comedy with emotional issues and I expect that tonight will be doing just that with Nick's storyline with his father.
