I would absolutely love to say that Mal Reynolds brief appearance on Castle last night was a wonderful surprise to me, but I'd be lying. You see, while it was wonderful, it was hardly a surprise. The web was abuzz with the rumor of the Firefly reference all last week and a grainy production image even made it onto the web. I had almost posted about it myself, but the graininess of the image and uncertainty made me decide to wait it out, and if true, let it be a nice surprise to our readers.
The scene itself (which you can watch below if you missed it) was just about as perfect of an in-show reference as I've ever seen on television. If you can think of one that was done better than this, please let me know about it, but I can't imagine anything done better, and more pleasing. Had Sawyer, on Lost, ever uttered to Charlie "shut up you little hobit!" it still wouldn't have been as pleasing and fun as what Castle did. Watch for yourself:
The best line, of course, was his daughter saying, "didn't you wear that like, five years ago?" They even managed to include the nice little Firefly music in there. And while I loved the scene, it also reminded me two things, first, how badly I miss Firefly…and second, how much I really love Castle. Maybe not as much as Firefly (d'uh!) but I still love it.
I've included a nice little gallery below with some screen shots for those Firefly hungry fans out there.
