Once Upon a Time: Do You Prefer the Fairytale World or Storybrooke?

Once Upon a Time (ABC)One of the complaints I've heard about Once Upon a Time is that some fans seem to prefer one world over the other.  In some respects, it's not difficulty to understand their frustration.  The fairytale world seems to contain rich storytelling.  While we know the tales that are being shown to us, it's interesting to see the little twists the writers put on the fables, or to see them fill in the blanks.

The fairytale world is also full of more archetypal characters, but it's amusing and exciting to watch the Evil Queen being evil, or see Prince Charming act heroic.  Even if the stories occasionally delve into cheesy territory, all is forgiven because we know they're telling us what is essentially a fairytale.

Contrast that to the other world in Once Upon a Time, namely Storybrooke.  Some fans are a bit frustrated by the slower pace in the so-called "real world".  With so many characters there, it's understandably difficult to focus on each of them.  Archie, for example, had been missing for a few episodes.  More often than not, both Regina and Emma seem to take center stage.  Both ladies are fun to watch, but I can understand that it becomes tiresome to watch the two of them butt heads in every episode, without either one of them really achieving something (notable exceptions to this rule involve Regina killing Graham and Emma becoming Sheriff).

The repeated "will-they-won't-they" saga of Mary Margaret and David seemed to have come to an end when they kissed and started up an affair, only David is still married to Kathryn and his relationship with Mary Margaret isn't progressing.  That may change, however, in the upcoming February 19 episode of Once Upon a Time, according to this promo.  And the reveal of "Belle" in a padded room in the Storybrooke world was quite interesting and something they should definitely focus on again soon.

Once Upon a Time (ABC)Once Upon a Time is at its most interesting in Storybrooke when it focuses on two things: (1) Mr. Gold, who is one of the most complex and fascinating characters on this show, and (2) when we get hints that people are remembering their true past.  In this week's episode, Regina finally confronted Mr. Gold and he revealed that he clearly knew about their fairytale past.  I know that fans were also excited when Graham remembered his past as the Huntsman, although his life ended far too soon.

So here's the question: which world do you prefer?  Or do you like each world equally?  I think the action in Storybrooke will heat up if Mary Margaret and David are finally forced to make a decision and more people start remembering their fairytale pasts.  Will prolonged contact with Emma finally trigger more memories for people?  We hope so.  But the question becomes: what happens if they all remember?  Will the world of Storybrooke fall away and the action returns to fairytale land?  Who knows when that may happen.  In the meantime, vote in our poll below and let us know your thoughts in the comments.

The author of this post (i.e. 'me') is simply addressing some complaints that I've heard about the show, where people have said that they prefer the action in the fairytale world to what's happening in Storybrooke. I think that it's true that the action in the fairytale world is certainly moving faster than what's happening in Storybrooke, but I'm not suggesting that I dislike any aspects of the show.

i agree with you gregg. I love seeing both what they use to be like in the past and now. My Fave couple are Charming and Snow and Ella and Philip. I loved how emma came in to the dinner and saw her parents sitting there looking at each other. That was timeless. I fell sorry for mr. Gold he was once human and you could tell he really was starting to fall in love with Belle.

We all know how this stroy might end…..it will all be in someones head…..remember they are the creators of lost. I am sure thats why they are losing viewers.

Sad bc I enjoy the show very much its fun.

I don't think it's going to be in someone's head. And that wasn't the end of LOST. No part of LOST took place in anyone's head and everyone was alive and all the action on the island actually happened. It's just that the final season took place in a type of "purgatory" where all the souls were able to reconnect. But no part of it was in someone's head.

In Once Upon a Time, even Storybrooke is real, in a sense. It's a separate world or dimension created by the Queen for the fairytale characters.
