Once Upon a Time Recap: A Giant Problem

Once Upon a TimeJorge Garcia returned as the Giant, Anton, in this week’s Once Upon a Time.

A Case of Mistaken Identity.  Cora decided to bring Anton to Storybrooke so the Giant could wreak some havoc in town, but it turns out that he had a particular target in mind: David.  After being awoken by Mary Margaret, David and Leroy while trapped on Hook’s boat, Anton immediately recognized David and swore his vengeance.  He was outnumbered so he was forced to flee, leaving the others confused about his desire to harm David…at least until they figured out it must have something to do with Charming’s twin brother, James (more on that below).  Regina, now teamed up with Cora, found Anton and fed him a piece of mushroom from Wonderland to restore his size.  Anton immediately went on a rampage, throwing cars through the streets of Storybrooke and inciting panic.  David attempted to clarify his real identity to Anton, but without Emma to prove David’s twin brother story, Anton refused to believe him.  When running from the Giant didn’t work, David tried to trade himself for the lives of the other townspeople.  But the mushroom’s magic wore off in the nick of time and Anton founds himself human-sized once again while nearly falling down a well.  Despite the terror he incited, the townspeople banded together to save Anton’s life.

The Quest for Bae.  Mr. Gold headed to the Charming home to collect Emma so they could leave Storybrooke to search for Bae and found himself with a third wheel: Henry.  Emma was unwilling to leave her son behind with Cora in town, so the boy joined the Bae search party.  Easily irritated by Henry’s questions and worried about the strangeness of leaving Storybrooke, Mr. Gold found another unexpected problem: the loss of his magic after leaving town.

Jack and the Beanstalk.  We got quite a bit of backstory on Anton this week when we learned how teased he was by his brothers because he was among the smallest of Giants.  Put that together with his fascination of humans – who the other Giants seemed convinced were nothing more than destroyers – and he felt very out of place in his own home.  So he decided to go on an adventure to the human world and climbed down the beanstalk.  But, of course, the townsfolk were not reacting well to a giant in their midst.  Over at the castle, we once again met with Prince James (the original), who was busying himself with his newest lady: Jacqueline.  His father, King George, reminded him that the kingdom was teetering on the brink of bankruptcy and asked him to take care of the Giant problem.  James and Jacqueline (a.k.a. Jack) decided to take advantage of the situation and tricked Anton into giving them the Giants’ treasure to help with their debts.  But it turns out that what they really wanted were the beans and they stormed the Giants’ kingdom to steal them.  Several Giants lost their lives to James and his army, while Anton’s brother, Arlo, demanded that Anton destroy the beans in order to protect them – and the other realms – from the humans.  James managed to steal some gold and left Jack behind when she got hurt, but Arlo died in the fight.  Before his brother died, Anton revealed that he had destroyed all of the beans and salted the land, but Arlo gave his brother a stalk from the beanstalk and told Anton that he would know when the time was right to grow the beans again.

A Way Back to the Fairy Tale Land?  After Anton’s life was saved in Storybrooke, he revealed the last remaining stalk to his new friends and said that he could grow some magic beans to help them get back to their land.  Anton, David, Mary Margaret and the dwarves headed to some farmland and Anton revealed that Cora had brought him to Storybrooke to grow the beans.  In order to protect the beans from Cora and her plans, the dwarves recruited Anton and agreed to protect the crop.  Mary Margaret expressed hesitance to David about returning to the fairy tale land, especially if it would separate her from Emma again.  The Charming family may face a big choice when the time comes to head back home.

Greg’s Search for Answers.  Belle hysterically asked Ruby about the magic she had seen before she was hit by a car before once again being sedated by a nurse.  Greg watched the scene with interest and later visited Belle to tell her that he didn’t think she was crazy because he had witnessed the same thing before crashing his car.  Will these two team up to expose the magic in Storybrooke?

Bae’s search party arrives in New York in next week’s Once Upon a Time.  Watch a preview here.
