Once Upon a Time Spoilers: Will David & Mary Margaret Get Together Sooner Than We Thought?

Once Upon a TimeOnce Upon a Time is the show that gives with one hand and takes with the other.  For example, instead of dragging out the "John Doe (a.k.a. David) in a coma" storyline, the writers woke him up in episode 3.  That's good news,  right?  Unfortunately, fans who hoped that Doe and Mary Margaret (who was instrumental in waking him up) would be together were disappointed.  Instead of the couple being reunited in Storybrooke, a woman named Kathryn arrived at the hospital, claiming to be David's wife.

We know from a recent visit to the set of Once Upon a Time that all hope is not lost.  In fact, Josh Dallas revealed that Kathryn's claims to be the former coma patient's wife could be false (read the interview).  Gennifer Goodwin also told us that fans should be that true love conquers all in the show, even if their characters seem to face insurmountable odds.

As it turns out, those odds may not be as insurmountable as we may have thought.  An episode synopsis from ABC reveals that a relationship could bloom between the two as early as the December 4 episode of Once Upon a Time.  According to the network, in the episode entitled "The Shepherd": David - aka John Doe - must choose between staying with Kathryn or leaving her to be with Mary Margaret, with whom he's fallen deeply, and inexplicably, in love.

Wow, that boy doesn't waste any time, does he?  The truth is, we're just a bit confused.  David didn't appear at all in this week's episode of Once Upon a Time and Mary Margaret appeared only briefly.  The show will air episode 5 on November 27, leading right into "The Shepherd" on December 4.  Which means that, hopefully, the fifth and sixth episodes will feature a large dose of the couple to explain the build-up to David's unrequited love.  In addition, the sixth episode will focus heavily on Prince Charming in the fairytale world.  Alan Dale will be making a guest appearance as his father, King George.

All talk of timeline aside, we definitely want these two crazy kids to get together.  And it looks like they may not be the only ones.  Photos reveal that Emma and the Sheriff share a kiss on December 11, but given what we learned recently - that Regina and the Sheriff are sleeping together - we have to wonder whether the Sheriff has pure intentions.

Once Upon a Time is currently on hiatus for a week, but the show will return on November 27.  View a trailer and photos for the episode here.

It’s starting to appear as if James/David is the one who starts remembering their life in fairytale land. May not be all of it but it’s certainly appearing to be going that route. And, it’s not that confusing to think David falls deeply in love w/Mary so quickly when you consider that he already is deeply in love w/her. He’s just finally conscious to feel it. He just can’t explain it yet but it’s always been there. The whole true love trumps all. The curse is powerful but no where near powerful to stop erase true love and stop them from feeling it for one another:

Yes, I agree that there is most definitely a connection between the two of them. I'm just curious how the writers will make a hook-up happen so fast and have it be convincing. I mean, we know about their fairytale relationship, but the Storybrooke characters aren't supposed to. In any event, the show is great and it sounds like the upcoming episodes will be terrific.

      • Amanda says:

Oh, I don’t think they will be hooking up completely yet. That’s too quick. I personally think it’s going to mirror/parallel the fairytale world without David & Mary realizing it (or at least David for the most part & Mary completely) as a way of showing true love trumps all. Their Storybrooke characters don’t have remember it completely for history to, in a way, repeat itself.

        • Christine says:

Good observation! So far, the Storybrooke relationship has mirrored in a way how it played out in fairytale land in the past. Not completely mirrored but enough to make someone notice. I had to go back & watch some of the clips on YouTube to see for myself & you’re right. I also like your theory that it’s James/David that begins to remember his life in fairytale land. He may have more memory loss than all the others & it makes someone think he has the farthest to go but when you do really think about it it makes sense. He has no memories of Storybrooke. He feels this draw & powerful connection to Mary. Those emotions just might trigger his memories if fairytale land. Since he can’t remember Storybrooke, those surfacing memories take precedent. If it plays out like that, than it dies make sense for him to be so deeply in love w/Mary so quickly.

        • Clarissa says:

That's very interesting in terms of David being the one to remember. Since he is, essentially, a blank slate, it's very possible he's the first person to start remembering the fairytale world.

In any event, I am VERY excited to see how the first season plays out. This show is a new favorite of mine.

aw! I am such a sucker for romance.

  3. Gwen says:

I really love this show! Snow/Mary & Charming/David are my favorites. I hope they get together soon & don’t drag it out for very long. It’ll be refreshing to see a true, totally in love couple together & are just kept together for once. No melodrama & over the top soap opera type issues that keep them apart. It would be very interesting to see them as individual personalities & grow as individuals yet stay together as a couple throughout the series.

Looks like the actress who plays Kathyrn really won’t be on the show past the 6th episode

    • Amanda says:

True. They would have to finish up her storyline for the show in order for her to be in that play. Since the episode description clearly states that the storyline is coming to a head & that link confirms the actress is listed to be in that broadway/off-broadway play, it’s pretty clear the episode will indeed be her last one. Guess that tells us which one David chooses.

As for the upcoming death — I am thinking it's Cinderella's baby since she did make a deal / and with every deal there are consequences — pretty sure the Sheriff is the huntsmans – loyal to the queen but unable to kill Snow White , kind of the same situation with the Sheriff — as for who remembers— possibly Doc — Jiminy Cricket — conscience comes through ….. these are my thoughts

    • Martha says:

I think so too. In their real lives, the huntsman knew the queen was wrong and he couldn't kill snow white. And it the Storybrook world, the sheriff(huntsman) knows the mayor(queen) is wrong again in attacking Emma. The huntsman(Sheriff) is a good guy.

  6. Aimee says:

I absolutley love this show! I think the Sheriff is the huntsman- it makes sense with the sheriff being made to do things that the mayor tells him to do yet he doesn't like arresting Emma. As for the character death that is supposedly coming up I think it is one of the smaller roles like Ruby. I love Charming/David and Snow/Mary's story it is so romantic and I can't wait to see what happens. I hope they introsuce Sleeping Beauty soon. I would love to see how they would protray her in Storybrooke.

  7. Sara says:

I think David’s love isn’t unrequited since it’s crystal clear it’s returned by Mary Margaret. We saw that most clearly at the end of “Snow Falls.” Problematic as long as the “wife” is in the picture but not unrequited.

    • Clarissa says:

Maybe "unrequited" isn't the most ideal word. I meant it more in terms of them not being together, not necessarily in terms of Mary Margaret not loving him back. She absolutely feels connected to him as we saw in the hospital (especially after he woke up). But the wife is definitely a problem for now.

      • Sara says:

Absolutely a problem for sure. LOL. A problem that won’t find resolution in just the 6th episode. That’s way too soon for it to be resolved. Those crazy kids will definitely officially get together before the end of the season but it won’t be that quick. Won’t make for very “good” suspenseful TV. It won’t be that easy. There has to be some sort of drama & conflict. Just in my personal opinion, it’ll be in the back half of episodes of the season we’ll really get to see those guys coming together as a couple in Storybrooke. They are Snow White & Prince Charming after all & someone would think the writers know how much people want them together & them together are sort of the symbol of hope & love. Doesn’t mean they’ll be thrown together that quick though. Gotta make them & the viewers work for it. Just my personal thoughts.
