Once Upon a Time Spoilers: Rumpelstiltskin's Backstory & the Fallout From Graham's Death

Once Upon a TimeOnce Upon a Time gave us a shocking closing scene in its midseason finale.  After seeing how the Evil Queen hired the Huntsman to kill Snow White after her father's death, we learned that he was unable to go through with it.  And guess who was the Huntsman?  None other than Sheriff Graham in Storybrooke.  Coincidentally, Graham was the first Storybrooke resident to truly remember his fairytale past.  Throughout the episode he kept remembering flashes of his previous life, but he finally remembered everything when Emma kissed him.

Regina, obviously, was displeased by this turn of events.  Not only was Graham remembering his true past a threat to her curse, but she was also jealous that he had turned away from her in favor of Emma.  We saw that a piece of the fairytale world beyond Snow White's coffin was buried within Storybrooke: the Evil Queen's vault.  One of the boxes in the vault contained the Huntsman's heart and she crushed it, thus killing Graham in Storybrooke.  Fortunately, the Huntsman's tale isn't finished and we may see him popping up again in the fairytale world.  For a more detailed recap of the last episode, read our review.

ABC has now released a few spoilers for the next new episode of Once Upon a Time, which will air on January 8.  The episode, titled "Desperate Souls", deals with two main issues: the fallout from Graham's death and Rumpelstiltskin's history.

In Storybrooke, Emma wants to take over Graham's post as sheriff to honor his memory.  Naturally, Regina isn't on board with Emma's plan.  But Emma is determined and decides to run for "a coveted Storybrooke public office", which we're assuming is the sheriff position.  Unfortunately, Sidney has decided to run against her.  The network also warns that Regina and Mr. Gold will both be taking opposite sides in this public battle.  Clearly one can deduce that Regina is on Sidney's side, but it's curious that Mr. Gold will be taking Emma's side, isn't it?  What exactly is his endgame here?  To break the curse?

While Mr. Gold continues his mysterious plot in Storybrooke, Once Upon a Time will be showing us Rumpelstiltskin's history in the fairytale world.  As it turns out, he wasn't always a creepy trickster.  It looks like Rumpel was, at one point, a normal man with a son.  But in the episode, he "tries to track down the ultimate power source in order to help his son avert the horrors of a meaningless war".  Could these actions have turned him into the Rumpelstiltskin that we know?

OMG what if Rumpelstiltskin's son is the Huntsmen? XD
We see no Rumpel Jr. and Huntsmen was abandoned as a child X3

Wasn't it Regina's farthers coffin instead of snow whites?

    • Clarissa says:

Yes, it was Regina's father's coffin (presumably real) in the mausoleum. However, it was Snow White's glass coffin at the bottom of the mineshaft that Archie and Henry got trapped in. So far, Snow's coffin and the Queen's wall of boxes are the two pieces of the fairytale world that we've seen in Storybrooke.

Did you even watch the last episode before you made up that summary? The heart room wasn't under Snow's coffin.

    • Clarissa says:

I did watch the episode and I also replied to OUAT above because my statement is being misread. I never said the heart room or vault was UNDER Snow's coffin. I said "We saw that a piece of the fairytale world BEYOND Snow White's coffin was buried within Storybrooke: the Evil Queen's vault."

In other words, we've seen two things from the fairytale world in Storybrooke: (1) Snow's coffin at the bottom of that mine shaft, and (2) the Queen's vault room which is under the mausoleum belonging to her father.

I’m so upset Graham is dead. I loved his character. I was hoping that he really wasn’t dead. Curse you Regina!
