This is what happens when you mess with Fringe.
Past Life, FOX's newest show, is also the first show of 2010 to be cancelled. The series, which revolved around a detective who used the concept of reincarnated souls to solve cold cases, started off strongly with a pilot episode viewed by 9.07 million people, a respectable but not stunning showing for the new series, which was slated to replace Fringe in the Thursday lineup until Fringe returned on April 1.
The dropoff was steep.
Past Life's second episode, "Dead Man Talking" (if the titles are any indication, this show deserved to be cancelled) only managed to chart 5.31 million viewers, meaning that almost four million viewers. Those who would attempt to blame this dropoff on the abnormal schedule need look no further than FOX's other midseason replacement Human Target, which actually managed to gain viewers despite a similar premiere schedule to Past Life.
And don't even mention Past Life's third episode, which gathered 3.49 million viewers. That's less viewers than an average episode of The Vampire Diaries, which airs on the CW. No wonder FOX pulled the plug - those ratings are embarassing for a big network like FOX.
Not that Past Life was a bad show. It might have been a great show, but it simply held viewers as well as a sock could hold water (yes, I just created a completely new colloquialism). FOX has stated that it will burn off the rest of Past Life's episodes later on in the year, probably in the summer. On Fridays. Prime real estate. Meanwhile, new episodes of Kitchen Nightmares, starring Gordon Ramsey, will air until March 18, when reruns of Fringe will resume, leading up to Fringe's spring premiere, "Peter," which will signal the return of good scripted television to Thursdays on FOX.
Past Life, which had a promising premise, may fare better in the summertime, which is slowly starting to be built up to carry more scripted television and less reality television. But I wouldn't hold your breath.
Okay, all my favorite shows are all on Thursday night…hello? Past Life was fast becoming my favorite over Supernatural and Vampire Dairies (which I must say..get over the stupid Vampires would ya! It is old already). Past Life and Flash Forward are new, interesting and thought provoking….unlike reality shows! I hate it, when I search to find a show I like and they cancel it…like American Gothic, Invasion….they were unique…and reality shows are BORING! All reality shows do is show the dark side of people….must I say 'Big Brother' 'Surviver' w/back biting, spoiled people just whining and crying. I give up…..Discovery and History channel is better anyways!!!!
I agree totally
Astral Projection…
I found your entry interesting thus I’ve added a Trackback to it on my weblog :)…
