For those who don't know, Portlandia is a tiny little comedy series that airs on IFC. Created by Saturday Night Live cast member Fred Armisen and musician Carrie Brownstein, the series serves as both a send-up of and love letter to the hipster culture. With sketches set around the perceived hipster capital of Portland, Oregon, the series has generated a surprising amount of buzz despite the fact that it only attracts less than a million viewers per episode. Those numbers are on the rise, though, according to IFC.
In a press release, the network noted that the second episode of the second season, which aired January 13, "[built] on the successful performance of the series’ second season debut." A total of 643,000 viewers tuned in for the episode, up 26% from the previous week's season premiere. 504,000 of those were in the key 18-49 demographic, up 29% from the premiere.
"In addition, the episode ranks #1 for percent of playback growth among all original primetime shows on cable over the past two weeks among households, total viewers and A18-49," the press release boasts.
It's rare to see such second-episode growth, though perhaps this could be ascribed to the second episode's incredible guest cast, which included musician Eddie Vedder, Battlestar Galactica's Edward James Olmos, and actor Jeff Goldblum.
If episode 3 manages to maintain that viewership, it seems likely that Portlandia will be renewed for a third season.
Portlandia will air the third episode of its second season, "Cool Wedding," January 20 on IFC.
