Pretty Little Liars Photos: Toby and Spencer Grow Closer...But Will She Discover His Secret?
Pretty Little Liars is, first and foremost, a show about secrets, so it's no surprise that its main characters are unaware that Toby is a member of the "A" Team. But unlike the secret about Mona being "A", the audience is in on the subterfuge now. But the question is: will Spencer or one of the other Little Liars discover that Toby is a double-agent?
In the upcoming January 22 episode, titled "Mistery Loves Company", the audience will be creeped out as we see Toby continue to fool his loving girlfriend. In addition, it seems like the recently returned Meredith has a few secrets of her own: "Aria is down for the count when sidelined by the flu, so Hanna and Emily are on their own to follow up on a new clue. Surprisingly, Meredith steps up to help take care of Aria while her father is away, but when it starts to look like Meredith may have ulterior motives to her nursing Aria back to health, Hanna and Emily turn their attention towards saving their friend. Is Meredith just trying to start anew with Aria and be her number one fan, or is there reason for her friends to be concerned? Meanwhile, Spencer takes a break from all the sleuthing to surprise Toby for their anniversary."
Pretty Little Liars producer Marlene King has said that Toby's motives for joining the "A" Team will be explored in season 3B. When asked whether Toby ever really cared for Spencer (or any of the other girls that he was friends with), King said "I really want to let the fans discover the answer to that question themselves, which you will learn the truth of that in season 3B". We'll also learn more about Toby's family history, which will play a part in his larger storyline. The first Halloween episode revealed that Toby's birth mother died when he was young and King says that "we’re going to learn more about his mother in this upcoming season. It’s really exciting to sort of start that storyline."
King also directed this particular episode and warns that "there’s a lot of just deep, deep emotion that begins with [this] episode, and then it just carries all throughout the rest of the season. It’s just so powerful and so gut wrenching and Troian Bellisario [Spencer] did such an amazing job for us this year. We’re really excited to share her storyline with the fans."
