Franklin & Bash 4.09 Review: “Spirits in the Material World”

After one heck of a season, Franklin & Bash has finally reached the penultimate episode of the season. This is the latest into the year that F & B has ever run, and they took full advantage of their October air-time with a Halloween-ish episode. The boys are investigating a claim in which a couple was sold a haunted house. I’d like to tell you that Jared and Peter aren’t scared of anything but…that’s not the case. But it was funny!

Tonight we celebrated the return of Judge Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson) as the boys battled their old law clerk friend (Danielle Panabaker) in the courtroom. It was tough to battle their friend on a case, but of course the boys are resilient in their tactics, and (nearly) always prevail. In this case, it actually helped that they were friendly with their opponent. Who knew?!

As always, guest stars pushed along a wonderful, fun episode. Hudson, Panabaker, and Cloris Leachman led a cast of always well used guest stars, but it’s always Jared and Peter who steal the show. This episode also explored the dynamic between the boys and Dan Mundy (Anthony Ordonez), who I’m really enjoying. Dan has really come into his own as a character, and even though he’s very different from Pindar and Carmen, he’s created a separate but excellent dynamic. I really appreciated the story with Anita and Karp this week too, because it humanized Karp. I always appreciate when they humanize the enemy. He even voluntary went to a Franklin and Bash party. He wants her bad.

One thing that’s getting a little tired is Jared’s love life. I love this show, these characters, and pretty much everything about this hour for the last 9 Wednesdays, but heartbreak over Swatello, the fling with Peter’s mom, and now with Bonnie? Danielle Panabaker is clearly going to be busy with The Flash, so it probably won’t last too long, but still. I guess it’s refreshing to watch him go through all the stages of losing an important relationship. I wish they’d shown a little bit more of Peter and Officer Wendy, though. Even DAN had a happy ending in this episode. Is it bad that I’m worried about the season finale, given how great everything worked out in this one?

Franklin & Bash season finales are always a good time. I’m looking forward to next week at 10/9c, and I hope you are too! I’ll leave you with some courtroom wisdom from Peter and Jared:

Jared: “There’s no such thing as hearsmell”

Peter: “Or is it smell say?”

What did you guys think of this week’s episode? Are you excited for the finale? Let us know!
