Teen Wolf Season 5 Episode 2 Review: ”Parasomnia”

Teen Wolf

After Monday’s great Teen Wolf season premiere, last night’s episode was an even stronger follow-up, as the big bad’s motives were more or less revealed, setting up what is to come in Season 5.

While the premiere made me think that we were going to get certain answers to some mysteries and some that would be left unanswered, it was the other way around: all the mysteries that I didn’t expect to get revealed so soon did. First of all, I totally called it that something was compltely off with Theo (or “Theo” at this point), as he is connected with the big bad in some way. Even though we never saw it, it was terrifying just knowing that the minute the episode cut to black, he smashed his fake dad’s hand. So not only is Theo possibly connected to the big bad (unless, he IS the big bad?), but he is also able to turn into a full wolf. The amount hugs and apologies that everyone is going to owe Stiles when this is all over is both a funny picture as well as pretty sad, because have they not realized yet that Stiles is THE detective of this pack?

I guess because 10 episodes in one summer can be over pretty quickly before having to wait till 2016, the Teen Wolf writers felt they needed to reveal the big motives of the villains very early on. We once again touch upon the subject of the enemy being more tech and science-based instead of the supernatural route. I think it’s a pretty neat idea to see just ordinary humans (as far as we know) being able to turn anyone into a werewolf through medical ways instead of the tradtional way (a bite). The victim of this episode is a young girl named Tracy that ends up becoming a werewolf.

The bigger question now is: what are these doctors needing homemade-werewolves for? I’m just assuming that they have a hatred towards Scott (how does one of the greatest people in the world have SO many enemies?) and probably his pack as well. There may be a clue or two in the flashbacks that we saw from Lydia’s POV in the premiere as to what these doctors will be doing in the next couple of episodes. In short, I like what Jeff Davis and his team have decided to do for this season in terms of how we know the villain so far.

I think as of now this was my favorite Liam episode since the character first showed up on the series, although I don’t get what is up with Hayden, a girl that he apparently was rivals with in the sixth grade. However, knowing this show and the writers it has, she is probably going to be revealed as one of the doc-werewolves (let’s just call them that for now, although Stiles will probably find a better name for them), but I don’t mind the comedy of it all. I loved though how Liam outed himself to Mason the way he did because nothing is greater than a loud roar in a high school corridor.

Overall, “Parasomnia” was a sweet follow-up to a solid season premiere, and based on that trailer that came out during the Scream series premiere (which I recommend to watch), Season 5 is going to possibly be the show’s best season ever.

Teen Wolf airs on Monday nights, 10/9c on MTV.
