I think we all already loved Anna Kendrick. The actress just exudes a sweetness that you do not see in modern day Hollywood. She sings and dances, and above all else, seems like an utterly sweet and genuine girl. But if you are anything like me, you heard Anna Kendrick and SNL in the same sentence and got kind of scared. You see, the problem is that if an actress or actor I like appears on that show and isn’t funny, I stop liking them. I know it is lame, but I can’t help it. The good news is that Anna Kendrick and SNL made an oddly endearing couple this weekend.
So I am not the only one who has noticed how many musical monologues have been happening this season on SNL, right? I mean, they can be sweet, but are rarely funny. A kind of SNL gimmick for hosts who may not be so great at a monologue. Well, Anna Kendrick opened with a musical number that somehow managed to be cute AND good, which you don’t get often. From there, they did a very high number of musical bits (the chick can sing!), but again, oddly, it worked. It is like they knew how play up what we already liked about her, while switching it up enough that it kept us laughing. There is one song in particular she did that I wont mention here, but had me cracking up and reminded me of the Lonely Island skits from seasons ago.
So in the end, Anna Kendrick and SNL won me over. Why? Because it all felt very organic. She not only seems sweet, but seems comfortable in her skin, and you just can’t fake or force that. Plus, she makes a great Little Mermaid.
