SNL has ended its lengthy search for a new black, female cast member, something the show has been sorely lacking for some time now. SNL even lampooned its lack of diversity with a cold open sketch that had Scandal’s Kerry Washington running around trying to play every black celebrity under the sun from Beyonce to Michelle Obama in one skit.
Now, SNL has chosen Sasheer Zamata for the part, seen in the top right above. Several dozen actresses have been vying for the part, but Zamata won Lorne Michael’s heart in the end, and becomes the show’s first black female since Maya Rudolph left five years ago. I’m not even sure I knew Maya Rudolph was black, to be honest.
It’s important for a show like SNL to keep diversity up not just because it’s the right thing to do, but because it helps the program creatively on a huge level. Zamata should be a welcome addition to the cast, and I can’t wait to see what she brings to the show. She’ll make her first appearence on January 18th when Drake is the musical guest and host. What do you think of Zamata joining the cast?
