Fitz is at the point in his political career where public opinion doesn’t matter to him. Ever since finding out that his victory in the presidential election was fixed by Cyrus, Mellie, Verna, Olivia, and Hollis, he’s noticeably withdrawn from all those around him and the responsibilities of his work, only going through the motions and finding joy in his son. Mellie moving out of the White House should be the devastating move that snaps him back to reality, as a public divorce could be the scandal that breaks his already fragile administration and runs him out of office. However, on the next episode of Scandal, he’s more concerned about Olivia and sends Jake to check on her.
Olivia isn’t exactly known for accepting help from people, especially when her sense of trust with Fitz was shattered upon finding out that he was behind the surveillance. The two may have made up last week, but they’re far from where they were and besides, there are more important things to consider right now. Namely, Olivia’s safety, which is threatened to the point where Fitz orders Jake to stay with her and protect her at all costs. Olivia rejects the offer, both due to her strong independent streak and desire to not fall back into old trappings, and is then faced with the possibility of spending time in a cell if she doesn’t comply with Fitz. By redirecting the conversation when Fitz brought up Mellie moving out and implied that she could come over, Olivia made a stand that said she’s not ready to fully forgive him yet. But will she continue to resist leaning on him with her life potentially at stake?
Elsewhere on Scandal, Cyrus has been forced to run damage control after Mellie moves out of the White House, causing him to look over James’ announcement of a promising television opportunity, while Olivia is confronted with the surveillance footage that implicates Cyrus as the mole.
Scandal airs Thursdays at 10:00 on ABC. You can check out a preview for the next episode here.
Is Olivia in as much danger as Fitz implies by his orders to Jake? Will the press get wind that Mellie’s absence isn’t due to chicken pox but marital discord in the White House? Do you think that Cyrus is actually the mole or are we in for one final big twist this season?
