The third season of Showtime’s Shameless will be getting a little political.
West Wing alum Bradley Whitford has signed on to appear in two installments of the dramedy as a gay political activist described as “powerful,” “well-dressed,” and “sophisticated.” There’s no word on when Whitford’s episodes will air or any other details about his character. The most logical Gallagher for him to interact with is Ian, possibly to help him get more comfortable with his sexuality or introduce him to a career field that he might not have considered before. It’d give Ian a “role model” of sorts in terms of a successful man that’s making a difference and just so happens to be gay, which might be the thing that he needs most right now.
The third season of Shameless will find Fiona at the center of the action, her response to earning her GED and having Jimmy back in her life a tad underwhelming. Fiona has had to curb her ambition for years in order to raise the kids, but now that she achieved something that she never thought possible, she might not be able to stop learning and growing as a person. Can Jimmy keep up or will she outgrow the one she once thought would be the one?
Aside from his award-winning role as Josh Lyman on The West Wing, Whitford has had series regular roles on the likes of The Good Guys and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. In addition, he’s made appearances on The Mentalist and In Plain Sight, with his last guest role coming on Parks & Recreation.
Shameless returns January 13th, along with House of Lies and Californication. You can check out the TVOvermind Shameless discussion forum here, as well as the first teaser for the upcoming season here.
What role do you think Whitford’s character will be playing next season? Which member of the Gallagher family, if any, will he be interacting with most often? Are there any actors that you’d like to see guest star on Shameless in the future?
