If any Gallagher is going to succeed on Shameless, it will be Lip. Fiona has the street smarts and the work ethic, but she doesn’t put herself first often enough to make any real progress; Ian always has the military to fall back on, but with how tangled his relationship with Mickey has gotten, his focus from his future has shifted and shows no sign of improving anytime soon; Debbie and Carl are both too young to be able to predict, but considering the latter’s sociopathic tendencies, it’s likely he won’t come out ahead of his siblings in terms of success. So, if Lip is going to be such a success, what’s he going to do now that he graduated from high school?
On the next episode of Shameless, Lip has become the first Gallagher to complete high school; since he finished during the fall, he’ll be getting his diploma from the guidance office and walking in the graduation ceremony during the spring, much to his chagrin. He doesn’t seem to want to make a big deal about it, particularly around his family, mainly because Lip doesn’t know what his future holds. Mandy applied to colleges for him and he expressed interest in the MIT robotics department, but after she ran Karen down, he might not be willing to go down the path that she helped clear.
One thing’s for certain, he doesn’t want to end up like Frank. Even with the selfless act at the end of last week’s episode, Lip has always been the most virulently anti-Frank Gallagher of the bunch and when his father takes him on a father-son dinner to celebrate his accomplishment, it just reinforces why. Instead of talking to his son about potential career paths or giving him reassuring advice about finding his way, Frank tells Lip to live life to the fullest and enjoying things while he can. While that’s not the worst thing he could have said, Lip has seen what happened when Frank decided to live life to the fullest and he doesn’t want to go down that path of self-destruction, not when he has his siblings counting on him to set a good example.
The third season finale of Shameless airs Sunday at 9:00 on Showtime. The show was renewed for a fourth season, set to premiere in early 2014, this past January.
What have you thought about this season of Shameless as a whole? Is Jimmy dead or will he pop back up sometime during the finale? Now that Lip has graduated high school, what should he do with his life?
