Benedict Cumberbatch Reveals Sherlock Season 2 Details

sherlock season 2The news that Sherlock season 2 will air on the BBC Sunday, January 1 has led to further details about what we can expect beyond the small amount of information we got back in July. Sherlock himself, Benedict Cumberbatch has been talking to the BBC about this new season and what we can expect from his adventures with Watson (Martin Freeman).

The first episode "A Scandal in Belgravia" is an adaptation of "A Scandal in Bohemia" and sees Sherlock taking on Irene Adler (Lara Pulver). Adler was referred to as "the woman" in the books and it appears that the series will also be using this character as the first female to truly get under Holmes' skin. There has been much discussion both on our comments page and in general about the nature of Sherlock's relationship with Adler, whether the connection is a physical or mental one and Cumberbatch is here to explain what direction they are taking this character in:

"Irene Adler is someone who has an incredible amount of power. She's very beautiful, very smart and intelligent, quick-thinking and resourceful. She's got a lot of attributes that mirror Sherlock and she doesn't suffer fools gladly, Steven [Moffat] and Mark [Gatiss] are very clear though, this is Sherlock 'and' Love, not Sherlock 'in' Love. But viewers can expect a lot of flirtation!"

That should quell a few worries that they were going to turn Sherlock into a Casanova and that they will be sticking close to the original text in terms of this relationship. Along with Irene Adler this episode will be bringing a case that involves international terrorism, a British government secret conspiracy and rogue CIA agents that should make for a very fine first outing for this new season.

One thing we can also expect to see this year is some more humanity from Sherlock and Cumberbatch explains that these characters have evolved; don't worry though, there will still be "a few 'I can't believe he's doing that' moments." Cumberbatch also reveals that the three episodes will cover different types of tales in the Holmes canon:

"The first episode is going to be about the heart, whatever that may be for Sherlock. The second episode is about horror and suspense and the third is going to be a bit of an emotional rollercoaster and a thriller, so expect love, horror and thrills!"

Sherlock will air on PBS Sunday, May 6 and will be available to buy on DVD in the UK Monday, January 23.

You can currently catch Benedict Cumberbatch in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and in War Horse which hits theaters December 25.
