Sherlock season 2 hasn't even started yet, and already details for the season finale have been released. The episode, titled "The Reichenbach Fall," looks to be even more climactic than last season's finale, "The Great Game." And, of course, it will deal with the big showdown between Sherlock and Moriarty (or, as the BBC press release describes him, "the greatest criminal mind that the world has ever seen").
The release continues: "Sherlock and John knew he wouldn’t stay hidden for long. But even they never guessed the sheer scale and audacity of the crime that would propel Moriarty back into the headlines. The crime of the century. The Tower of London, the Bank of England, Pentonville prison – all sprung open on the same day as if by magic! But Moriarty’s plans don’t stop there… Sherlock and John lock horns with their old enemy in one final problem that tests loyalty and courage to their very limits. Sherlock must fight for his reputation, his sanity and his life. But is he all he claims to be?"
Obviously, the episode will be adapted from Arthur Conan Doyle's infamous Sherlock Holmes short story, "The Final Problem," which features one of the earliest and most well-known cliffhangers of all time. That story ends with Sherlock and Moriarty falling over a cliff and into a waterfall -- the Reichenbach Falls -- to their apparent deaths. While this was originally intended to be the final Sherlock Holmes story by Conan Doyle, negative fan reaction led to Holmes's resurrection in the novel The Hound of the Baskervilles (another inspiration for a series 2 episode). It seems likely that something similar will happen in this episode, albeit with a very modern twist, as has been true for every Sherlock episode so far.
Sherlock will premiere its second series on January 1 in the UK, with "The Hounds of the Baskerville" airing on January 8 and "The Reichenbach Fall" on January 15.
