Last night after a rerun of the Sherlock season 1 finale on BBC 1, it was announced that 'Sherlock series 2 is to be broadcast next year.' This obviously caused some confusion when it was previously understood that the hit show would return to screens in the UK this Fall. Now however there is no time frame other than 2012 for Sherlock to air in the UK with a May slate for PBS to show the mini-series.
This announcement which took many by surprise had fans taking to Twitter to show their frustration and confusion. It wasn't long before Sherlock producer Sue Vertue responded via her twitter to disappointed fans saying:
"Please don't blame the poor BBC schedulers for the wait for #Sherlock. They can't tx it till we deliver and we're still filming - Sorry!"
This delay is indeed disappointing news especially as more details have been emerging regarding this new batch of episodes. These details include some rather spoilery photos of them shooting in London and Cardiff that can be seen here and here. One big piece of Sherlock news is casting related as it has now been revealed who will be portraying Irene Adler in the first episode "A Scandal in Belgravia". Den of Geek is reporting that Lara Pulver (Claudine in True Blood) has nabbed this very significant role and it will be intriguing to see how Adler is portrayed in this version and how much of a love interest they will actually make her. I would personally like to see Adler portrayed without the romantic angle, as someone who is interesting to Holmes because she can outwit him thanks to her intelligence and not because she is an attractive woman. What are your thoughts on this casting news and in what direction would you like them to take the Irene Adler/Sherlock Holmes relationship?
Are you disappointed that Sherlock won't return to our screens until 2012? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

I'd rather the delay than the series get thumped by Downton abbey. This gives the BBC plenty of time to do more publicity on the series. I hope the extra time means they can take care with special effects like the explosion at the pool. I hate cheap BBC effects.
They picked a great Irene Adler and I hope Sherlock does get some sexual chemistry with her. There are enough other characters for him to be doing sparring with.
I live in the states and loved series one. I've recommended it to many people. I would rather see a delay than a poor product or not see it at all. Of course I also want to see THE HOBBIT as soon as possible. I guess i'm a little torn.
weirdly enough someone in my family works for WETA and was on set for that the other day :-D
Lara Pulver was a fantastic Claudine and I think will bring a lot of cunning and complexity to the role of Irene Adler. I'd love for the series to recognize that Irene is not actually meant to be a romantic interest for Sherlock, that she's someone he respects as having outwitted him.
I too have no desire to see an Irene/Sherlock relationship. I loved the Sherlock movie (with Mr. Downey Jr) but the love story between Adler and Sherlock is not supposed to exist. I do not wish to see that carry over into the show, it's beyond too fantastic and something like that would ruin it for me.
I don't think they can have Irene Adler be a love interest for Sherlock becuase I am pretty sure he is gay in this series.
I'm incredibly saddened by this, but I agree with everyone else. I'd rather wait a bit longer to see the quality level they deliver than have them rush and make it crappy. Still *sniff* *sniff*
Awww. I'm extremely sad. D:
I don't want any sexual thing between Adler and Holmes.. in the books he wasn't with her romantically. He just admired her.
OMG serious sad face! Oh god sherlock with a girlfriend {awkward!}. SHERLOCK is officially amazing and i cant believe i have to wait until nex year for the second series. that cliffhanger had me climbing the walls!
Well I live in the States so this means we will have to wait an extra long time to view season 2! Disappointing, but at least it is being filmmed.
Thankfully there is always an internet site streaming! I don't think I could take having to wait even longer for this brilliance to grace my screen again.
Irene Adler has always been one of my favorite characters. She was an independent woman in a time period when women were treated more like property than human beings. She married early in the original Doyle story (an hilarious scene I sincerely hope Moffat will reprise) at the ripe old age of 30 – VERY old for a Victorian lady to wed. In the original Canon, Watson spends a good deal of time insisting Holmes is incapable of love – yet by the end he frames and hangs Irene's photo on his wall. While I surely can't see Sherlock married with children, Doyle left open the idea that he can love an "ideal woman" from afar – like Sir Galahad. I think that's as close to love as he can get and I hope that's how Moffat leaves it.
P.S. and yes, I am deeply disappointed my favorite show won't air until May in the U.S. But then, no one predicted riots in London, conflicts with The Hobbit etc. I'd rather the creators take their time and do as great a job with the sequel as with the first season than have them do a rush job just to get it out there. My best to all involved.
Well on the bbc website it says that Sherlock is gay soooo a romantic involvement seems to be out the window all in all -_
"Girlfriend? No, not really my area." – Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock
"To Sherlock Holmes she is always THE woman. I have seldom heard him mention her under any other name. In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex. It was not that he felt any emotion akin to love for Irene Adler. All emotions, and that one particularly, were abhorrent to his cold, precise but admirably balanced mind." -Dr. Watson, A Scandal in Bohemia by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
I think Sherlock can admire Irene Adler without falling in love with her. Besides, the author Laurie R. King already came up with that. (And anyone who has read her books know that that was a stupid idea. Sherlock just isn't the romantic type, and certainly not towards women…..
Noooooooooo! Well, I guess it can't be helped with filming and conflicting schedules (both Martin and Cumberbatch are involved in The Hobbit even.) As long as it is still in the making, I can wait.
Blegh, no thank you to the Sherlock/Adler romance. I've had enough of that with the Downey Jr. series. Sherlock liked her, /liked/ her. Just that. He found her to be an exception to the breed, if you will. People make such a big deal of him putting her picture up, yet disregard his reaction to Watson whenever he is in serious peril, or even Watson's own manners toward Sherlock. They're grasping at straws, the fans of Sherlock and Adler as a romantic couple. However, I don't think I have much to worry about since Gattis doesn't seem too keen on portraying them in a romantic way. Here's hoping he wont be pressured into making it so. Adler is a fantastic character, I hope we get to see an awesome and accurate adaptation (woo, alliteration!) of her finally that isn't downplayed by a romance that just wasn't there.
Guh! I could go on and on!
This is a great show! We here in Baltimore Maryland (US) are waiting for season 2 patiently (or maybe not so patiently)!
Oh well, I suppose I'd rather wait as well than have Sherlock meet the same fate as Kingdom: vanishing after a cliffhanger ending. Well, ok, Kingdom wasn't as dramatic an ending, but it did leave the viewer with questions that will never be answered.
Is the UK plagued with idiotic "reality" shows replacing tv series as we are in the US ? "Reality" as in interviewers asking fake questions to get answers they later edit/attach to questions they didn't ask to begin with. Where a finale is filmed in Sept but released in Nov so assistants herbicide the lawn to kill the grass, pull the leaves off trees, and have contestants wear winter coats! This is now the definition of entertainment.
I am dissapointed! I am from Indonesia and I lovvvveee Sherlock, I can't wait for Season 2!
I really hate the portrait of Sherlock Holmes on that movie directed by Guy Ritchie! but this Sherlock version by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss is a masterpiece!
I just started watching the series and love it! Its a dissapointment to hear about the delay but i would much rather have a good quality film. I hate it when series get sloppy.
I also believe like many others that Sherlock should NOT have a romantic relationship with Adler. It would dissapoint many to see this original character to be sucked into a perdictable love afair.
Shelock was excellent. I think Cumberbatch's portrail is far superior to Downey Jr's and could see this series become a major motion picture franchise. Well done.
I bought season 1 last xmas and have been looking forward to season 2 ever since. It's going to be hard now waiting 'till May. Will have to rewatch season 1 a few times before then.
I will add my voice to those who say that as disappointed as I am that I have to wait for more of this I really prefer to wait for a quality product. I think that any connection between Sherlock and Ms Adler is more abstract than physical. May I take this opportunity to also say that Martin Freeman is without a doubt my ideal for Watson. He is in his way much more layered that Holmes. The chemistry between these actors is spot on.
Ahhh! I was thinking that it was finally October, and decided to check on news about Season 2 of Sherlock, to see if its started yet (I'm from East Coast USA)… Delayed! The Horror!
It had better be spectacular when it comes out! (Heheh–I'm sure it will.)
I don't even remember how I came across Season 1, as I don't usually watch BBC shows. I was probably looking up something about Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes movie and hit a link that led me to the BBC site. But having seen the episodes, I was hooked. Its a great modernization of a classic story– and I can't wait to see more.
I'm a huge Sherlock fan… collect memorabilia and even have a cat named Sherlock. My thoughts on the new series, "fantastic". Only one criticism. Come on guys, Sherlock should smoke a pipe, not use patches. If there has to be a "love interest", forget Irene and make it his pipe. Don't try to be so p.c. Can't wait to see the next episodes.
Thanks for leaving us with a cliffhanger then not giving us the resolution. You effers.
The delay between three episodes and a cliffhanger and another 3 episodes (probably with a cliffhanger) has just been too long.
Call me when there are 22 episodes on DVD.
I am also disappointed in the delay, but I agree with the others on here. I understand, but still don't like to wait. As far as the love interest, please don't go there. It's like Sherlock said in the first episode, he is married to his work. There are people in this world who love what they do more than relationships. I hope the show stays away from all that. I just like a good intriguing mystery :-)
I would prefer they not use the romantic angle with Adler, either. I’m with the OP on that one!
I hope that since it’s almost 2012 now, that we won’t have much of a longer wait. I’ll just be glad to get Sherlock back!
Arsenal need to confirm on their website ASAP…..then 2 or 3 more critical n quality players before the window closes!
Don't forget Cumberbatch's stage career. He recently finished Frankenstein at the National Theater, swapping roles on a nightly basis with Johnnie Lee Miller. They broadcasted one performace here in the states and it was brilliant. Hard to pass up an opportunity like that!
I would write Adler/Sherlock's relationship semi romantic and here is the reasoning… It is rare for Sherlock to meet a counter-part let alone a female counter-part that can outwit him. I think he finds these people the most intriguing. It wouldn't be anything sexual but I think it would drive him to admiration and fascination similar to what we saw in the very first episode's antagonist. As a writer I think there has to be a balance between what the audience feels, but also who the character is, and portraying that character the best way the story teller can.
Ohhh, can't wait for series 2!! I really wish they would air it on BBCA the same time they air it in the UK…I just don't understand why it takes them so long to get it to the U.S….
If anyone reading this lives in the UK, just know this: YOU GUYS MAKE AWESOME TV SHOWS. I LOVE YOU.
And don't forget U.S. people – those in the UK know we want our Sherlock, so maybe they'll upload it on Hulu… :D
I hope so!
Well folks, here in Australia, yes down under, the forgotten land. One of our commercial networks decided it was a good idea to air the first episode, without any advertising, out of the ratings period and left it at that.
We don't even know whether we'll be seeing the first season in 2012. Yep, Australian networks are very quick to buy total rubbish, yet when a quality show like Sherlock turns up Australia is the last country in the world to see it. Beggers belief!
I've heard rumors that this next season will premier on New Years day, but I'm not sure if that applies here in the states with anyone who has the BBCA channel.
Sorry, I was just wondering if anybody knew when Sherlock season 2 aired in Australia in 2012? I heard February but I could be wrong.
Cheers
im looking as well! thought i had missed it! Very poorly advertised!! They have a habit to advertise months in advance but not near the time for some reason! Nearly always miss first episodes of series!
