Jeff Lindsay Did Not Kill Rita Morgan

Jeff Lindsay, the creator and author of the Dexter novels, is getting a little fed up by fans of Showtime’s hit TV show Dexter thinking that he killed off Dexter’s wife, Rita. In one of the most shocking moments in TV history, Rita was killed in the final moments of the TV show’s fourth season by the notorious Trinity killer.

It turns out, Jeff Lindsay was just as shocked as the general TV audience. Lindsay has a new Dexter book that was recently released, his fifth, titled Dexter is Delicious. The first season of Showtime’s Dexter followed the first book, “Darkly Dreaming Dexter” pretty closely. Every season after that, second, third, fourth and now fifth, have been entirely dreamed up by the writing staff at Dexter.

That isn’t to say that there aren’t similarities. Rita and Dexter have had some wedded bliss in the books as well, but they’ve given birth to a little girl, not a boy.

The fifth season of Dexter has run through half of the season, and while it hasn’t had the bang-up plot of the superb fourth season, this new run shows promise with Peter Weller coming on to investigate Dexter thanks to his ties with Quinn. Will Dexter finally get outed? Will the show pull a Weeds (drastically changing the show by forcing the Botwins to go on the lam)? Somehow I doubt it, but who knows?

But if you do miss Rita, just pick up the books. She’s alive and well. And don’t go to Jeff Lindsay and yell at him for killing off Rita. He gets enough of that already.

New episodes of Dexter air Sundays on Showtime.
